If it is still asking you for a disk, go back to steps;

3. Enter regedit into run box to start the Registry Editor
4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Setup
5. Double-click the value SourcePath in the right pane and enter the location where you copied the I386 folder C:\windows\I386 (that's assuming your XP operating system is on C:)
6. Close the registry editor, and log off from Windows, or restart your computer for the setting to take effect.

It should have worked, but try changing the source path to just C:\ and see if that works.

If it doesn't is is probably because the XP disk you sourced the I386 folder from was the wrong disk. If you have a XP 32bit OS you would need a 32bit disk. If you have XP 64bit OS you would need a 64bit disk.

PS.
Have you tried a system restore yet? If not, please try it.
If you have no restore points and the (correct) I386 folder source path C:\ does not work (sfc /scannow asks for a disk), then we really have a problem.
The I386 folder should be recognized as long as at is the right one.

Here can be seen my XP I386 folder installed correctly in XP which is recognized when needed by sfc. Any possible file required by sfc (system file scanner) to repair a corrupted registry is in that folder:
In Setup folder: f\windows\I386 (I have a dual boot system with XP on F: drive and W7 on C: drive).

If still not working (asked for disk), is the computer a store bought one? If so, it should have a hidden Factory Restore partition which can be activated to return the computer to it's original new factory condition. If so, what brand and model number is it so I can look up it's restore procedure? At a guess though, you will probably need restore disks for the model which may have to be sent away for (if still available) unless you still have them.
Makes no real sense unless the I368 folder is from the wrong version of XP (?) It can't be from just any XP version.

A 2002 computer?
No point trying a factory restore as it would require recovery disks that would not be available. Only thing I could find out about a Hp 3000 is that it's a printer :)

How old are the cd drives, 2002?

If you sure there is nothing wrong with your CD drives, perhaps you could consider re-installing XP with a borrowed disk (must be the same XP version as you have installed or your key-code won't work). Remember though, XP will no longer be supported after April 8th next year.
CD drives are not hard to live without nowadays since flash drives have become so cheap.

I think the problem was an incorrect I386 folder which was from a XP professional CD and you have XP home 2002 installed.

My friend has an xp Prof Cd.
