Hi Alwilson',

Welcome to WhatThetech, :)

I hope we can help you here with your Windows Update problem.

Here is the first option I would try:

Step 1:
Verify that your computer's date and time are accurate and that Internet Explorer language option is not empty.
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the lanuage button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options" dialog.

When checking your date (including the year) and time, also check the Internet Time and Time Zone. Double click on the date/time in the notification/system tray area (near the clock) select Internet Time Tab and then select update now. If it's not already checked, check automatically synchronize with an internet Time Server - WinXP.

Step 2:
Also check these settings:
1. Tools>Internet Options> Advanced
2. Scroll down to the Security Settings.
3. Make sure that the two boxes are checked that say "Enable SSL 2" or "Enable SSL 3".
4. Uncheck "Check for server certificate revocation".

Step 3:
Also delete Temporary Internet Files
1. Tools>Internet Options >General
2. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, Clck OK

Step 4:
1. Tools> Internet Options > Security
Click Trusted sites, click Default level.
Click the sites button and clear the checkbox "Require server verification"
(http:) for all sites in this zone."
Now add the following:
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

If required, reboot and try Windows Update again. If still no success, have a look at the following links for more clues.

Make sure you haven't got anything blocking Windows Update like
Nortons,
Zonealarm etc
Also make sure you don't have a Web Accelerator working in the backgound such as
Net Zero
HiSpeed
Speedband etc

Clear out your temporary internet cache

Try a reboot and then try WU again.

Are there any specific error codes that you do see?
At what point does it continue when checking for the latest software, or when checking for updates?

Still no joy, then try Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click START, Choose Run
In the Run box, type "services.msc. " (without the quotes)
Click OK
Right click the Automatic Updates service,
Click stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder :
a. Click Start, click Run, type "%systemroot%" (without the quotes" and then click OK.
b. Right click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click START
Choose Run
In the Run box, type "services.msc." without the quotes"
Click OK
Right -click the Automatic Updates service
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Reboot if appropriate and try WU again.

Note when you rename the SoftwareDistribution folder - you will loose your history but not important.

Your Windows Update problem is exactly the same as I was having sometime ago and by going through the above (supplied from a Microsoft Newsgroup exchange) you should correct your problem and allow you to download and install WU's again.

Good Luck and don't hesitate to post back if you have a further question.

If this option does not help, please post back as I have others I can send you.

kind regards,
Hi and thanks for the suggestions.. unfortunatly the update still wont install after trying all your options. so if you do have any other suggestions that i could try i would be very gratefull.. cheers al.

Al, that information will take you some time to get through, I have other, but if you cannot fix your Windows Updates using those sites, get back to us or start a MS Windows Update enquiry here

Hope to hear you have solved that 'nasty' soon.

kind regards,
Here's another possible solution you could try, before doing all your reading Tallin so graciously assigned you ;):

Step One:

1. Go to Add or Remove Programs, try to remove all .NET Framework.
2. Please download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility
from this link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9…1BD/msicuu2.exe

3. Then, please run it from Start-> All Programs-> Windows Install
Clean Up.
4. Please remove all Microsoft .NET Framework shown there and click
Remove.

Step Two:

1. Click Start->Run, type INSTALLER and click OK.
2. In the open folder, click View menu and select Details.
3. Right-click the Date Modified column header.
4. Click Comments
5. In the Comments column, locate the cached Windows Installer file
that displays Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 (English) RTL x86 enu.
6. Right-click the cached Windows Installer file and then click
Uninstall.
7. Close the window.
8. Delete the cached Windows Installer file.

Step Three:

1. Restart your computer.
2. While your computer is booting up, press F8 to invoke the startup
menu.
3. In the startup menu, choose Safe Mode.
4. Log on as an administrator.

Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and
perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary.

5. Delete the folder C:\WINT\Microsoft.NET
6. Delete the folder C:\WINNT\system32\URTTemp
7. In the C:\WINNT\System32 folder, locate the file mscoree.dll.
Right click and rename it to mscoree.old

Step Four:

1. Click Start->Run, type REGEDIT and click OK.
2. Navigate to the following registry key by expanding the "+" beside
the registry tree in the left pane:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETFramework

3. Delete this key in the left pane.
4. Repeat steps 2-3 to delete the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup
5. Restart your computer to Normal Mode

Step Five:

1. Please download the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1
Redistributable Package from the following link and save it to C:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details…;DisplayLang=en

2. Click Start->Run, type "c:\dotnetfx.exe /C" (without quotation marks
and there is a space in this command) in the open box and click OK.

3. Click Run, and type "C:\.NET Framework 1.1" (without quotation
marks) in the open box click OK

Note: If you are prompted to create this folder, please click Yes to
continue.

4. Locate the folder C:\.NET Framework 1.1 and double click the file
netfx.msi in it to install .NET Framework components.

If .NET Framework 1.1 can be successfully installed, we can go on to
install .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details…;DisplayLang=en

Step Six:

If the above two can be installed correctly, please download KB886903
from the following link and install again:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details…;displaylang=en

If the problem still exists, please describe the error message when
installing Microsoft .Net Framework Service Pack in further detail.
