This does not happen if I position the cursor over the button or hyperlink, wait for the bubble to appear and than click (but hey, that's no good - I didn't buy a new machine just so that I have to wait for it!).
New Toshiba Laptop with Vista………. and severe lag.
Bummer.
Did it operate this way from the very beginning - first time you turned it on?
How much RAM is physically installed.
Does your Video Card have its own memory or is it onboard video and sharing from RAM?
What version of Vista do you have pre-installed.
How long have you had the machine?
Vista requires alot of RAM (minimum 1gb) to run almost as well as XP with 512mb RAM.
Vista needs 2gb RAM to function "briskly", which your machine probably is not doing at this time.
Toshiba may have given you several "trial version" applications and utilities that are consuming a bunch of your machine's system resources.
Have you done anything to reduce the trial-ware, advertise-ware offerings?
Best Regards

to answer these:
- 1 GByte RAM
- It's onboard video (yeah, I know…)
- Vista home premium
- Euhm… 3 weeks now
I've removed Norton antivirus, switched the thing to classic view to match XP's UI as much as possible. No fancy desktop backgrounds either. Installed AVG Free antivirus, switched off the Toshiba "cards" software (= softkey support). It connects through wireless, WPA (that's eating some performance but not too much), no Ethernet or bluetooth connections (switched them off in the power profiles too). The whole thing is quite responsive, no serious lag noticable.
I noticed it the first time I switched it on. Since it was used in the shop for demonstrating purposes I wiped and removed all partitions from the harddisk and re-installed using the delivered rescue CD's. Than I let windows update do it's work… wupdate installed a new driver for the touchpad, but that didn't help. I'm gonna'try if using an external mouse helps.
Anyway, you think it's a performance problem?
From your first post, I was thinking it was a performance issue related to system resources.
From your second post, some of my thinking may need to be adjusted.
Here's part of what I initially was thinking.
New user buys a new machine and fires it up.
New user starts trying to initiate browsing or other application, before all of the processes and applications from StartUp list have completely loaded.
This bogs down the loading of StartUp items and glitches the loading of the selected application.

From your second post, I gather that you are not an impatient new user. Sorry.

I've worked on very few Vista machines, so the learning curve is still steep for me.
Hopefully, a Member with more familiarity will come along.
If not we can Repost this Topic with VISTA more prominently typed in the Topic heading, to hopefully grab more attention.

You mention that you reinstalled Vista.
Did you also install DirectX 9.0c directly from Microsoft? (this is a separate download from Microsoft - not in "updates")

If you downloaded DirectX 10, there may be some compatibility conflicts.
Did you also install any necessary Chipset Drivers from Toshiba?
Best Regards
No worries mate, there's no need to excuse - it's an easy mistake to make. Perhaps I should've been more specific in my first postFrom your second post, I gather that you are not an impatient new user. Sorry.
I did not download anything for DirectX, but the recovery CD's obviously included DirectX 10 (at least, DxDiag reports its existence so I guess it's there!). I'll try to downgrade, good idea.If you downloaded DirectX 10, there may be some compatibility conflicts.
When I check the device manager, there are several Toshiba specific drivers installed, so I guess the recovery CD's are modified (by Toshiba) to include these. Note that Toshiba ships its recovery CD's pressed and all (so not, as often is the case these days, created and burned as part of the initial system boot).Did you also install any necessary Chipset Drivers from Toshiba?
Probably will help others to be alert to such a possibility with Vista.
Glad you decided to be a Member here at WTT.
