Hi there peeps. I'm on the mrs' 'pooter. It's a flandy new Dell with the touch screen and I just don't know what has been done to it. I've been about these things since early dos days but only to fix when things go wrong. My XP pro was the last thing I had and have now taken on the xp home that my wife was chucking out. Presently she is operating her laptop whilst I try to find a fix for this vista Dell touch screen thingy. I'm editing this to remove the excess - I wasn't aware of this until I'd tryped it all out then read where I should have put it  Ah well we live and larn :yeah: Cheers mij

Now that you're over to Windows for assistance from our Techs please fill us in with the details of your situation.

I thought I'd put this post in here but I can't see it anywhere. If a mod finds it parhaps it can be deleted? Ah well on with the learning … The mrs' 'pooter is a new DELL touch screen studio one rig. Wireless keyboard and mouse with a vista operating system. It was quite a bit different in setting up from her old XP home dell which I'm currently now using. I managed to get most software operating on it but something has happened to it security wise to stop her getting onto her online bank site, her online university site and to get windows updates. With the latter it just says error code 80148025. I've googled that and got no real help at all. Most replies refer to XP and not to vista. Others cite rundll32.exe but there is one in there also rundll32.exe.mui which is appently supposed to be there. I have HJT installed and can supply a log of that if it'd help. cheers mij
Looks like you posted this information over in our Malware Removal Forum:

Hi there.
This from my wife's new dell stuidio one touch screen thingy.
I run a small network (well more accurately it runs me really) and we have sort of managed to get by since early dos days, W95, 98se XPpro & home and now this 'orrible thing.

I tend to utilise things like BelarcAdvisor which wont run on this, it has a rundll32.exe problem on here.
Windows vista wont allow an update because of the above error, the error in the topic description that is.Error 80248015. Googling that was no help at all..
There are other security issues like it wont allow her onto her online bank or online university site.

She has managed to do all these things via her laptop which also runs vista quite effectively - no problems.
I can operate my bank account (same page and site) on this computer no problems.

The email software has been removed by her because it affected that as well.

Is there anything else I can provide to help you?
The 'pooter and OS I've already mentioned.
Studio one (what ever that means)
Keyboard and mouse are wireless.
I can provide a HJT log if it will help.
cheers
mij

From the sounds of your description, it is more of a "permissions" and User Account issue, since you are successful using the same computer on for your own online activities.

Do you have a separate User Account and your Wife has her own User Account….. here on this Vista machine?

Vista Error Code 801 relates to user account validation when accessing server…. but I don't recognize the longer number that you provided: 80148025

Do you have other Error Code information?

Is your account an Administrator Account?
Is your wife's account and Administrator Account?
I logged into it with her password so it knows no other than I'm her. I had the permissions to alter anything. I do have different details to open my bank account but I can see them all on the same page.anyway. To do this I ignored the prophets of doom - something my wife would not do of course. The code for the windows update refusal seems to be unusual in that googling it brought up only a couple of quotes and neither were of any use. I also tried to run belarc advisor but it came up with a rundll32.exe error. The error details were: Event name : Bex Application name : rundll32.exe Application version: 6.0.6ooo.16386 etc etc I can copy and paste these if needed. cheers jim PS My wife's is as an administrator, therefore so was I No other codes were given but on that I can check
DEP Data Execution Prevention is an important security feature in Windows, but it has caused much difficulty for certain users on certain machines.

Note: Some of those "certain machines" are some of those which "also" have CPU chipsets capable of Physical Address Extension PAE safeguards.

You can disable DEP permanently or for specific operations
I DO NOT recommend permanently disabling DEP

Disable DEP in Vista:

1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click on Command Prompt
5. Left click on Run as Administrator
6. Click the Allow button if it asks you for permission
7. Type or copy and paste this into the command prompt window:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff <– permanently disabled DEP

8. Hit enter and you should see the confirmation: Operation Completed Successfully
9. Reboot and DEP should be off.

Options

nx [Optin |OptOut | AlwaysOn |AlwaysOff]

Enables, disables, and configures Data Execution Prevention (DEP), a set of hardware and software technologies designed to prevent harmful code from running in protected memory locations. For information about how to use the Control Panel to change the DEP settings, see the Change Data Execution Prevention settings page on the Windows Help and How-to Web site.
Optin Enables DEP only for operating system components, including the Windows kernel and drivers. Administrators can enable DEP on selected executable files by using the Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT).
Optout Enables DEP for the operating system and all processes, including the Windows kernel and drivers. However, administrators can disable DEP on selected executable files by using System in Control Panel.
AlwaysOn Enables DEP for the operating system and all processes, including the Windows kernel and drivers. All attempts to disable DEP are ignored.
AlwaysOff Disables DEP. Attempts to enable DEP selectively are ignored.
On Windows Vista, this parameter also disables Physical Address Extension (PAE).

I'd recommend that you consider nx optout parameter

Give it a try and keep us updated with your progress.

Note: if you use nx OptOut, a user could also force execution of non-safe application software — not good
Therefore, if your use nx OptOut, the users of the machine will have to rely more strongly on the use of good judgement.

Best Regards
I tried everything and wasted a whole lot of time on that thing. In the end I decided to re-install the OS. I just cannot understand the constant change with windows. It's as if they have to justify a new OS by changing things which make no sense at all. :pullhair: Ah well, l'll wait for it to happen again. cheers jim
