xp sp2 - hi i wonder if anyone could help me shut down my sons computer. 50% of the time it will accually shut down and turn off, but other times it hangs. It gets past the saving settings and stops at the shutting down message, with the pointer frozen and just never turns off. So far ive turned up APS(no tab for this) MICROSOFT solved with sp2 and APPS on the system - I would be thankful for any suggestions
Is it overclocked..? That will cause that to happen but more than likely its just programs that havent ended in the alotted time Windows gives. Might check this.. click on start / run / type MSCONFIG and under the startup tab, see what all is starting with windows. If you havent set these up before then everything there isd probably starting and as well trying end to when you shut it down so cleaning that up will help. (with XP you can uncheck everything their… no matter what anyone tells you. However there maybe some things you or your son want to startup so you can leave them there if you like)
Thanks C! No not clocked. Never thought of being that drastic before, i do have his machine set up with more startup programs than i'd like. It has RECGUARD on it and was told if i stopped this i'd may have to get HP to re-image it. Plus i'm not sure about a few more. Is there a startup list you know of? Yes maybe i could trim the bones a bit more!!
Keep in mind your not unistalling or deleting anything here… just keepingit from starting with windows.. You can leave anything you want as well to startup, just the less the better
Thanks for the help C, you have given me a bit more confidence in uncheckin more! If anyone has the same problem this is VERY SOUND advice MSCONFIG is one of the first things i used when setting the machine up. If ur unsure what to uncheck just pop the whole name into your search engine and look it up - simple. The utility then arranges, groups the checked and unchecked for ease. It can help you sniff out a troublesome program. Thanks again C great help(You learn something every day!) I'll now experiment a bit.
Well noted nyankeec thankyou! I'd like to sniff this one out cos the lad likes his machine just right! Already have a marked improvement thanks to Crow
Yes been there before to reserch the services. I've read somewhere that you'll have to find the pages in the archives at the moment though. Anyway the problem seems to less frequent say about 1or2 times every 10 which is alot better so im gettin somewhere! back to the reserch
