Ok, so my brother just re-formatted his computer and did a fresh install of Windows XP. When he was updating his XP through the website and all that it froze when he tried to install the SP2. He the reformatted again to try it all again but he still got the same problem… :pullhair: Any help / ideas would be awesome! (yes his version of XP is legit as he got it when he bought his computer)
Hi If its all updates that srews up, you might consider if the windows updater is "out of order". It can be fixed with a program named Dial-a-Fix. If its only SP2, I would surely take Digerati's way of doing it. Regards Abydos
ok, so he got it fixed… thanks for the help but he ended up having to go in and change the name of a file in the SP2 files…. something about how it was named wrong and wasn't letting it get installed or something… kinda weird
This is what my dad did to my brother's computer problem with SP2 not installing. First he downloaded the install to a CD. But it was hanging at the end of the SP2 install - when it was "cleaning up after install". So my dad used the method below: 1. Double click on the self extracting Service Pack 2 installation file. * Take note of where the files are being extracted to "ie: G:\f08f4e9b56a1c1ad94\i386\" 2. After all the files have been extracted the installer will begin. * Do not click on "I Agree" or "Next" until after you have performed the following steps 3. Double click on "My Computer" on the desktop. * Navigate to the location of the temporary files for the Service Pack installer. * ie: G:\f08f4e9b56a1c1ad94\i386\ * Go one step further by entering the "update" directory. * G:\f08f4e9b56a1c1ad94\i386\update\ 4. Now here you will see both the installer file "update.exe" which is already running, as well as our culprit "FixCCS.exe 5. Right click on "FixCCS.exe" and chose "rename" * Rename "FixCCS.exe" to something like "FixCCS_disable.exe" 6. After you have accepted the changes, you can proceed through the installation as normal. * You will immediately notice that since you renamed "FixCCS.exe" it will not be loaded by the Service Pack 2 installer. Thus, your CPU will run like normal and will not be running at 100% * You will also notice that the installer quickly runs through "Running necessary processes before install" 7. Finally, the installer will complete and you will be given the option to "restart later" via a checkbox. I suggest just restarting immediately, so you can begin downloading the latest updates from Microsoft. My dad actually had the Windows Task Manager window open while the SP2 install was installing and he saw the FixCCS.exe take all the processing power and then hang. So when my dad saw this suggestion he knew it was the answer. There ya go, hope this can help someone else :)
