Cant Connect To Internet

I can't connect to the net on my XP Computer (service pack 1) There is a message that says "automatic private server" and it didn't show a DNS IP. I received a 169.xxx.xx as my ip. How do i turn it back to "assigned by DHCP" in order to connect to the internet. btw, i use comcast cable modem.....w/ router plz help asap *edit* i can't renew nor can i repair. i receive a message that says something about the IP and to contact blah blah blah...... APIPA
