ok i have been alot of issue lately due to a trojan dns hijacker dont think it was conficker but i was succesful pulling most of the virus off due to MS live scanner thing. i ran the problems as soon as it tried to remove a virus the machine tried to do an automatic shutdown to prevent so i stopped it by pressing shutdown -a … anyway i restarted my computer after it was done tried to hop on the net and BOOYAH no connection. i turned on my xbox to see if that is getting connection and it is so i no i have network capabilites. so i did a ipconfig had no ip address did a ipconfig /renew said rpc server unaviable. i went to the services to check and BAM no dhcp service is there. i went to the registry and no dhcp file is located there. if possible can someone please send me the reg key for dhcp for a WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2 just to get this part fix hopefully or is there a services defualt setting i can revert too. :pullhair: please help
would it not be simpler to just manually configure that network adatper ? pick an IP address either at the top-of or outside the DHCP pool of addresses subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 default gatway [make it the same as your other PC's] primary DNS = same as default gateway secondary = leave blank, [there are already 2 DNS server addresses in that Router.] Tallon41
so you're now saying that if you goto the Control Panel—-network connections, that there is no "local area connection" icon ? If that is the case, that would normally imply that the NIC device is either: not installed the device driver has a problem and is listed in "device manager" as "other devices" the device has been disabled in the device manager…or BIOS.
i also tried that but guess what theres no devices in device manager!!!! :pullhair: i tried to do a reformat but i get the infamous pcmica.sys error. so now im totally screwed. i went into the registry and theres no dhcp under services is there a way some how i can get the reg key for it and i can import it
Hi daboss101,

Perhaps we are not accurately understanding your situation.
Or more description on your part would help.
Or you are taking steps that are bigger than necessary.

I realize that having a problem like recovery from malware infection, followed by internet access failure, can be very frustrating.
I hope you will be calm and have patience as you wait for helpful replies.

So far, Tallon41 has offered sensible solution and considerations for each "part" of your described problem.
Perhaps it would help if you consulted the Guidelines: Asking for and Offering Help in order to more fully describe your situation.

For instance, if you are already attempting to Format and Reinstall your Operating System, it makes little sense to revert back to looking for specific Registry values.

And if the Format/Reinstall failed, you are dealing with something quite different from inability to create a new internet connection.

Tallon41 and others have been providing competent assistance here at WTT for a long time.
He and others will likely continue to be available to assist you.

Please be patient and give us a little more information about what you are attempting to accomplish and the steps you have taken up to this point.

Best Regards
my issue has clearly been given in the first post! i asked if any of you knew how to FIX THE SERVICES THAT ARE MISSING. is there a RESTORE PROGRAM THAT WILL RESTORE MY services to the defualt settings so i can access the net again. i tried to do a reformat its not gonna work i tried to upgrade to service pack 3 but the cryptographic service is not there neither. i tried reg cure that didnt work. i went to the SERVICES REGISTRY LOCATION and none of them are THERE so is there by anychance that there is a SERVER with back up REGISTRY FILES for issues such as this SINCE this is 2009 and virus are prone to remove certain critical componets of ones machine.

i also tried that but guess what theres no devices in device manager!!!! :pullhair: i tried to do a reformat but i get the infamous pcmica.sys error. so now im totally screwed. i went into the registry and theres no dhcp under services is there a way some how i can get the reg key for it and i can import it

hmmm, it almost sounds like you are not in a "regular" user account and have been loaded into the "default user" profile instead.

I recommend that you download Hijackthis and post in the "hijackthis" forum and have them 'ensure' that you are indeed clean.

I was going to recommend trying a Safe Mode system restore, but you've been recently infected and those 'restore points' are likely still infected unless dis-abled and then re-enabled it once you had it "cleaned"….if not, then do NOT use System Restore until you have done that !

[PS: there are other 'control sets' in the registry, besides the "currentcontrolset" did you TRY booting "last known good config" ?]
Hello daboss101

You are correct that in 2009 even more so than in the past, malware infections are damaging system files and that during malware removal, some of the system files are necessarily removed or otherwise go missing.

"If" you have successfully removed all traces of the malware infection you mention, then a Repair Installation using your XP installation CD may restore your operating system, without affecting your installed application programs and saved files and documents.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/h…ips/doug92.mspx (note: I am not Doug Knox)

If repair installation fails, you are left with Format and fresh installation of your operating system.
Note: a Format and fresh Installation of XP operating system is a "destructive" process, all files and folders will be lost.
Be sure to backup your valued documents, data and media prior to either of the above.

im sysmtem is fully clean now. i ran spybot adware malware regcure and the windows online scanner cleared everything out and when it removed the virus and restarted is when the SERVICES CAME UP MISSING. the hijack this wont show any service related issues already checked it. so i know for a fact when the virus where removed it removed alot of my services to get payback for removing it. my restore points are off due to the virus. im logged into safe mode under admin but still same error cause the PROBLEM IS UNDER MY LOCAL MACHINE meaning that it is going to affect that machine under any profile  if there was a way i can some how get a clean registry for dhcp then i might be able to brang the dhcp service back into the SERVICES menu and can start it.

im logged into safe mode under admin but still same error cause the PROBLEM IS UNDER MY LOCAL MACHINE meaning that it is going to affect that machine under any profile

Then NO. The problem is as Doug pointed-out you had a virus that replaced certain necessary Operating System files [as for your statements of being "clean", based on what you list, you are not clean.]

as for the services, again there is at least one other control set there in the registry, (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001)

You may want to try Ultimate Boot Disk or a Linux bootable CD to perform a format of C:\ I do not understand a relationship between PCI/PC bridge (pcmcia.sys error) and inability to start from XP CD. However, their may be a corruption of your Master Boot Record MBR that needs to be cleared with a format before your XP CD can install freshly for you.
ok good looking i found the other services under control set 001 i tried to import them into other one but did not show up im going to log in as admin and try it in safe mode
ok good thing is i now have the reg files but now when i try to import them it says that they have succesfully imported i go to the list and they are not listed. :smack:
