Persistent Issue

Alrighty then: I have an eMachine, Windows XP and my issue is updating and sound. For example, I have perfectly good speakers, lit up and all, but my computer won't play sound because I'm missing the sound Mixer…However, I cannot download the mixer, for when I do, when my computer re-boots, it's missing. And when I look under my sound settings, it says that there is nothing wrong with my mixer. Yet when I open volume control it gives me this error message: "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices…" but, I cannot do that, my computer tells me that I cannot change my mixer device…I kind of need my sound for an online class I'm signed up for that begins in January… ALSO, I believe it to be related: I cannot download automatic updates. Or rather, I can…but when my computer reboots after installation, the update isn't there and my computer says I have updates available (again). And I can't remember why it had been an issue, but there was something I needed to use and my computer needed the update and when I rebooted after it /still/ said I needed it. So like yeah… I don't have any clue, but you guys are the experts so yeah. Thank you so much, in advance.
