No volume control in task bar. Checked in control panel - tells me there is no audio device. I did have SoundMax but somehow computer doesn't see it or it has been lost. Two weeks ago (Saturday and Sunday) got on internet to watch a teaching video and had no sound. On Monday tried again on the same site and had sound for that site only. Other sites i.e. AOL … when you log into the e-mail you normally hear "You've Got Mail"…no longer hear it. However, I do have sound when listening to cds, iTunes, Real Player and Windows Media player.
Computer started becoming sluggish and would produce unpredictable results such as … task bar is normally blue … after start up is completed, it either turns white or gray. I go to properties to change the appearance and Windows XP is not always listed in the "Windows and Buttons" location. Not sure what is happening? Virus? Worm? Motherboard problem? Just need to clean my computer? I a definitely a rookie when it comes to computers and could use some help.
I have a custom computer with:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
250 GB hard drive
1.93 GB of ram
3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium D processor
Motherboard - ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5V800-MX Rev 1.xx
I appreciate you help.
My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
If Using Firefox, Download to your Desktop and then Double-Click on Icon to start installation.
Choose the default location of C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
Click the Install button.
Accept the license agreement .
The progam will place a shortcut on your desktop. This will make it easier for you to access the tool when required.
Click Do a system scan and save a log file. A Notepad file will open.
To post the text, first you must highlight the entire text and then press the (Ctrl+C) keys which copies it to your clipboard.
Now paste the log into this thread using the (Ctrl + V) buttons.
DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

TomK,
I received the following error message:
The CryptSvc service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 998 has occurred.
Invalid access to memory location
I wasn't sure if I should let you know before continuing.
TomK,
Looking back through the instructions you gave me, I noticed ComboFix.exe is not on my desktop. I have looked in the program lists and don't see it. Thought I could create a shortcut. What should I do?
wkrivo
TomK,
Wonderful, thanks. You said the ESET scanner would take hours. Could it take 6 or 7 hours? I'm about to leave for work and wondered if I could let it run while I was gone or do I need to be here to monitor it? I soooo appreciate your help.
Thanks.
wkrivo
