I have been given a GeForce GTX 470 as a present, so I figured why not build off it. I am looking for some advice on what would be great to run smoothly and for a few years that doesn't cost over $2000. Monitors and Keyboards Mice, etc isn't needed just mainly the cpu itself.
GeForce Gtx 470
Intel Core i7-860?
1000W power supply?
Any and all help from building around the graphics card itself is welcome.
Thank you.
A 1K Watt PSU is maybe a bit overkill. You'll find that your electricity bill will go through the roof if you use your machine everyday without at least some power saving options.
To be perfectly honest, building a PC just based on your graphics card doesn't really work. Each component has to work in tandem, and it's the synergy between all parts which makes a particular setup good.
Most of the time, it also comes down to personal preference. I tend to mix AMD CPU's with nVidia GPU's, simply because it's the most cost effective solution. In addition to this, however, I'd choose an nVidia based chipset to properly match the motherboard and the GPU. There is nothing saying that you have to match chipsets and manufacturers, but for my own peace of mind, I know it's guaranteed to work.
So my advice to you is the use the following list and choose all the components based on what meets your budget and your criteria :
Basics: 1. Computer Case 2. Motherboard 3. CPU 4. RAM 5. Hard Drive 6. Graphics Card 7. PSU 8. Optical Drive - DVD/CD Drive 9. WiFi Card (optional) 10. Aftermarket CPU Cooler (optional 11. Operating System (Essential!)
Then you also need to consider : 1. Screen 2. Keyboard / Mouse 3. Speakers
In your particular case, you're looking to limit any bottlenecks. A Core i7 860 will provide all the CPU power you need to supply your GTX 470, but a cheaper Phenom II would do the same job for a fraction of the price. At the end of the day, you're the only one that can make the decision on what works best for you.
If you still need a bit of guidance, post back with a completed list and we'll see if you could make any changes.
Cheers,
Nahumi
