My daughter's laptop is no longer able to access the internet. Her college made her give it to them and said that they had to do somethings to it before she could use their wireless service. When they returned it to her it no longer worked. She told them and gave it back to them and they were unable to fix it, told her she must have a virus on it. They had it, so how this happened, we don't know. I did have some guys at work look at it, they were having a contest to see who could fix it first. Well, the answer was none of them could. Apparently if you enter the IP address manually you can access the internet, but this is the only way. I don't know how to do this, and she doesn't and really don't think that this is the solution.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks
Hi, sorry to hear of the problem with your daughter's laptop.
If your daughter's laptop worked satisfactorily prior to them working on it and immediately on its return it did not, then the position is clear…the responsibility lies with the college and they should be asked in writing, to face up to their responsibilities and fix it. Their comment that "she must have a virus on it" is unsatisfactory and should not be accepted.
Her college made her give it to them and said that they had to do somethings to it before she could use their wireless service.
The above quote is unusual……when issuing your demand to the college authorities for the machine to be fixed, it would be wise to ask for a written explanation of exactly what work was necessary, what was actually performed, and why it was considered necessary.
When you have received a satisfactory response from the college authorities and the "wireless" is working again, if you feel that it is likely there is a virus on your machine then please go here: http://forums.whatthetech.com/Are_you_Infected_t106388.html
follow the instructions carefully and a malware fighter will examine the logs and advise you on any cleaning that is needed to get rid of it.
Good luck

they say that this is required in order to keep their network secure. They are unable to fix it and gave the virus explanation I think because they didn't know what else to say. So no ideas?

It's clear that its their responsibility to fix it, and its not possible to tell at this stage what other damage they may have done, whilst the machine was in their "care"….
I think you should get the written explanations from the college authorities, referred to in my previous post.

yeah, they were less than helpful when she told them that it worked fine before they did whatever they did to it, I will follow your advice and put it in writing and see where that gets me.
Thanks
