I tried to upgrade to IE8 yesterday, but when launching the program, my ADSL internet wouldn't automatically connect (as it used to). In trying to fix this I found I couldn't open "Internet Options" in my Control Panel - no erro, just won;t open. I tried a System Restore (twice) but after 20 minutes was told it wasn't succesful. I tried to re-install IE7 but this left me with an IE screen with no menu panels at the top, no tabs, no File, Tools etc. I then used Firefox to get online and ask for help (Firefox also will not connect automatically to the internet - I have to do a manual connection). One website suggested running a HiJackThis scan and getting someone to check for signs of a hijacked internet connection. I have AVG Free installed, have run Spybot S&D, Adaware and Glary utilities checks, but the problem persisists. I use the standard Windows firewall.
One more thing - I'm living in China, so access to any local "expert" who can read my English Windows in virtually impossible. So please keep instructions fairly simple for me!! Many thanks for any help!

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

The issues with your computer that you list, doesn't appear to be related to Malware/Spyware/Virus but we can have a look.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste". .
Thanks for this comprehensive and eay-to-follow reply. Sorry for not replying sooner, but I've been away on holiday. As you suggested it didn't sound like malware, I decided to have one more attempt at resurrecting IE before trying your tips. I rolled it from IE8 to IE6 and then upgraded to IE7. To my surprise this seemed to solve my various problems, so I've stopped tinkering now and will happily live with IE7 (and avoid IE8!). Thanks again for your help - much appreciated.
