Hi All - I hope you can help here - I have noticed that recently quite a few of my icons have gone missing, and some of the language under the icons has changed to what I think is Slovakian. Also, some windows boxes are in this foriegn language, while most others are still in English. More ominously, all system restores before Friday 23rd Jan(which is when I noticed this problem) have been deleted - which is a real pain as I had just set a SR on 21st Jan which was of a working fine system I have checked all of the language settings and they are set to English, and I cannot find out the reason or the cure. Kaspersky Anti Virus is clear having scanned in Normal and Safe Mode - Spybot S&D is also clear - The only changes I have made recently are - 1 - Did a CCLeaner Scan and removal + regfix 2 - Added Kaspersky 3 - Backed up whole registry as a file before removing reg entires for a Ricoh 1224c printer which was corrupt dirver requiring reinstall I have just installed Erunt and made a backup of the registry in a proper way now also - Below is my HJT log

I seem to have fixed this issue, but I am still losing old system restore points - I found out that MS update was not working because of proxy settings - I had to change some proxy settings with command line entry - Then I was able to update to SP3 and all the security fixes - That restored the icons, and removed all the foreign language except for the security centre icon. I then installed Flyakite OSX (which I had previously used, but an updated version) and all the icon text and language has been restored to English. I am still losing system restore points which I had set in the past 7 days though.
Hi lordgaz,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi Tomk

Thank you so much for your help and reply -

The computer seems ok since install of updates and SP3 (though some programs do not seem to work well with SP3 installed -) - System hangs a bit sometimes,

The Icons were fixed with the install of Flyakite OSX, which I had on the system previous to the troubles - maybe something in that program got corrupted.

System restore points from 26th and 28th are still intact….

lordgaz,

Well, I don't see any sign of malware. I suggest you post over in the Windows forum and have the Tech Team give it a look. When you post there, please provide a link to here so that they will see your logs.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
