Hi.

After opening inserting a friends USB KEY is installed something before it would open. After reboot, 44 object under 'Programs' in the Start menu were highlighted as 'new programs' despite having been there for quite some time.

Ctrl Alt Del works fine except that the 'Task Manager' button is Greyed out. Right Clicking on the Task bar also has a Grey Out 'Task Manager'

Mozilla is my main browser but IE periodically opened on an Asian site. Initial I got requests to change language that would not close (So I restarted the PC). The site still pops up but with out the change language requests. I am unable to change the Homepage in IE.

Norton found no virus.

I installed AVG and it found + healed 33 'trojan Horse' threats but the problems still remain.

Following the advice on the newcomers thread I attempted to update IE and OE. Both required an update to IE 7 which has been done. The Asian site no longer pops up randomly (in the last hour anyway). Up dates are not able to be installed

'Network policy settings prevent you from using this website to get updates for your computer.

If you believe you have received this message in error, please contact your system administrator.
Read more about steps you can take to resolve this problem (error number 0x8DDD0003) yourself. '

Troubleshooting tips involved open start, clicking 'Run' and running 'gpedit.msc'

This resulted in a File not found error.

The PC has been rebooted before running Hijackthis:

Below is the log. Any help is much appreciated.

I download a lot of movies however I guessed that the USB key is to blame because the owner now confesses to have similar problems.

I run a DELL Dimension 8300
Windows XP Service pack 2

I just recently spotted as new symptom. My computers Date is reset to the current day and month but the year 2000 every time I turn it on. This seems to be causing problem with AVG updates which continually error, with 'corrupted files'

Norton now see a virus 'bloodhound.w32.ep'. But can't do anything.
AVG spotted a file in the windows folder. It gave a warning after I tried to move it to the virus vaults (because it was from the windows folder) but I moved it anyway.

The system has gotten gotten much slower. and I can't turn on my firewall

I have disconnected that computer from the internet.
I run Daily AVG scans (After reseting the date to 2008) Common finds are 4-5 system32\[random letters].dll which get moved to the vault. As well as a C:\system Volume Information\_restore{letters simple to a game security code}\RP568\A0133933.exe which gets deleted
Also C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

It almost always finds a Win32 threat (worm) but warns me about the dangers of moving it to the vault I must confess that I have both moved it and ignored it on various days

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay in responding :( If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi there,

Thanks for the help

After logging on. I get an AVG bubble in the bottom right corner "You computer might be at risk; Avg 7.5.503 might be out of date; no firewall is turned on."

I have attempted to turn on the firewall using windows firewall and security center. Neither work.

20-30sec after logging on the date changes to 2000. I normally just change it back. If I dont then I get another AVG warning.

After about 3 minutes logged on, I still have the egg timer appearing sporadically.

About 10-15 programs in the start menu claim to be new. (They are not)

Right click the task bar shows the normal (I think) menu but task manager is greyed out. Ctrl + Alt+ Del brings up the normal windows security screen but the task manager option is greyed out.

I still get an AVG warning of a file: AVG Treat detection (30sec timer)
Text reads: "While opening C:\WINDOWS\SYTEMS32……" not sure of the rest because it disappears after the 30sec count down. I have sometimes moved this file to the vault and it always gives a warning that moving can affect system function.

I have been disconnected from the internet for the last few days (I use my laptop instead). I have reconnected here so that I can copy and paste the HijackThis log.

As mentioned above, AVG free was only installed after the problems occurred which may be why I cannot update the downloads.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Hi, Changed the view settings as suggested, Downloaded ATF, ran it. Never got a prompt to keep passwords despite using firefox as my primary browser. Downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, it is still looking for updates. No green on the advancement bar after 5 mins. Should I leave it going or restart it? I did not restart the computer between ATF and Malwarebytes. One other point, The AVG threat found came up again and I got more of it C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\(Random letters).dll Virus found WIN32\PEMASK Also (Particularly when shutting down) I get a reg.exe Application Error It takes a number of O.K. clicks to get rid of it.
Just an update. The program errored out while running (I thought it was just one of the Reg.exe errors so I didn't read it properly) The program would then not restart. I have rebooted the computer, but as you said, it is taking a long time to log on, in fact it appears to have frozen.
OK. Forget that one for now.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
I'll try that once the computer turns on. It is freezing everytime I turn it on. 1st time at log in, 2nd and 3rd while loading settings and now again at the log in
Hi, Sorry to double post. I'm just wondering how much slower the ATF makes the computer login process. To my shame, I have given up 4 times by holding down the power button and starting from scratch. 5 times a charm :) BTW I am making these posts from a separate (Non-infected) computer.
ATF wouldn't cause that. Will it boot in safe mode? Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen. Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter. This can take several miniutes to load.
Nice, It worked in safe mode. (Although I did have to type in my password twice). Should I run malwarebytes? I did only attempt it once Or should I move on to you 'Combi Fix' post? Can all of this be done in safe mode?
Some of these are trojan backdoor type infections.
They can steal private information so when we're finished you'll need toi change all passwords.
