I have "inherited" from a friend a problem laptop. She was infested with an Antivirus XP 2009 infection that she says Dell (I think it was Trend Micro) remoted into her system and "cleaned". She brought me the computer because after they did that, her installed version of "Switched On Schoolhouse" failed upon startup, with an error message indicating that the SQL Server database connection was broken. (We both have children who are homeschooled, who use SOS, and I am pretty computer literate - hence I get to help). According to AOP (maker of SOS), the cure for that, if restarting the SQL Server database engine doesn't work, is to save the datafiles out to another folder, uninstall SOS and SQL Server, and reinstall. I successfully got through all of that and was in the process of using AOP's data tool to reconnect the student files when the system starting going unresponsive.
I will note that in between uninstalling SOS and reinstalling it, I updated and ran PC-cillin that she had installed on the system. As I recall, it recognized and quarantined one file: ieexplorer32.exe from the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ folder.
Currently, the system will "work" for a few minutes – for a limited time – after booting, then it will quit responding (although on a couple of occasions it seems to have hung whilst coming back up). However, after booting it if you walk away and leave it alone, you can leave it for a long time and it doesn't go unresponsive, so the problem seems to be related to "doing things" on the system, and not just time. Most of the time, it sits there with the pointer and hour-glass. CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work; when it gets to that point the only out is to hard boot. Interestingly, one thing that I notice seems to consistantly cause it to hang is to try and open a folder on the desktop.
It does not run chkdsk after the hardboot, as I would expect it to after a hardboot. I attempted to run chkdsk from the command prompt, and it indicated it needed a reboot. When it rebooted, it flashed the familiar chkdsk screen with some sort of error message about the disk being "RAW" and chkdsk not being available for a RAW disk – but it moved too fast for me to read all of it.
Before you ask – no, she did not have the system set to periodically save restore points, so I have no restore point earlier than my reinstall of SOS. I attempted to restore the system back to that restore point, and System Restore seemed to just hang after I selected that restore point and clicked "Next". That's when I got really suspicious that there might still be some sort of infection.
The system is a Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP Media Center. All updates have been applied – in fact one of the things that happened to me while it was on my network is that some Micro$oft update downloaded and installed automatically.
I have run all of the hardward diagnostics that Dell has available on this system, following their Symptom Tree for a system lock-up, and all tests passed. These diagnostics ran for several hours, and appeared to test everything under the sun – memory, disk, fans, CPUs, buss, etc.
At present it is not being allowed access to the internet – I had my router firewall block that system (using parental controls) as soon as it began behaving badly.
I apologize for the rather verbose post, but I'm trying to include all information that might remotely be relevant. Here is a HJT log that I FINALLY managed to run. I am using a different computer to post at the moment, and captured this HJT Log on a thumb drive to be able to post it. I'd appreciate someone looking at this log and seeing if there are any indications of an infection; as well as any suggestions for next steps, short of reinstalling the O/S.
