[Resolved] Odd behaviour on laptop

I have a HP laptop running Vista Home Premium with 3 user accounts (mine, partner and daughter), and for the most part it runs well. However, there's been a couple of items of odd behaviour which leads me to believe there's something going on.

Firstly, there a dial up box that pops up every time the laptop starts up. We use dial up as we have no broadband access which tells me something is trying to "dial" home.

Secondly, MSN (Windows Live) messenger only works on 1 of the 3 accounts on the laptop. I'm not sure if there's any relation between both symptoms, but I'd be grateful if someone could look at the HikackThis log below to see if there's any issues. My partner's PC has the same symptom with the dial up box popping up, but one thing at a time…

Thanks in advance

Phil

Hello busdriver12

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

C:\Program Files\iiNet Web Accelerator <–You may be getting the dial up box from this program.

The rest of your log looks fine, no malware or viruses I can see.

Try running this system cleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Why don't you post in our other forum for windows issues as we just do Malware removal on this one,

Thanks for the reply Ken. There are 3 PC's running on our home network (the laptop and 2 PC's) and this behaviour is only evident on my partner's PC (running XP) and the laptop in question (running Vista). I cannot run the recommened cleaner on the laptop as it runs Vista.

My PC does not exhibit this behaviour which does run the Web Accelerator program like the other 2, and seeing the HijackThis log is OK, will leave it beas there must be something else causing it.

Thanks for your time :)
Your welcome,

ATF Cleaner will run on Vista, but just check off Temp Files and Temporary Internet Files.

Here is another that will clean out the junk

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!
**Note** Go to Options> Cookies and any you want to keep move them to The Keep window

Thanks again Ken. I already have CCLeaner installed on the laptop so will give it once over. I've been following this forum from it's Tom Coyote days and have learnt a lot of stuff off you all in here. :)
