I have a neighbor's laptop with Vista Home Premium. When I got it, there were pop-ups from Anti-virus 1 all the time, even when not online. During boot, there were at least 20 to 30 command prompt windows opening and closing before the desktop finally loaded. It's a lot cleaner now than it was, I ran Spybot and MalwareBytes, both cleaned up a lot of stuff. Although it is much better than it was, I'm not sure it's completely clean, so I'm including the HJT log here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi wbocock,

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.

Please note that as a Vista user you will need to right click and Run as Administrator to run the tools we will use.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Right click ATF-Cleaner.exe and select Run as Administrator to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Note your computer may boot a little slower the first couple of times.

Next

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then right click it to start the tool and select Run as Administrator
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt (Where %systemdrive% is usually C: or the drive that you have installed Windows). Post that in your next reply.

Next

Download OTListIt2 to your desktop.
  • Right click on OTList2.exe and select Run as Administrator to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTListIt2.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Please post back with
  • both OTListIt2 logs
  • Rooter log
No need for a Hijackthis log this time.

Tell us of any symptoms you are experiencing.

Thanks
Oldman960,

Thanks for getting back to me on this. Here are the logs that you requested. The only problem that is evident with the machine now is that the desktop takes forever to load after the logon password is given.

To me, it's still very slow to load the desktop. It isn't bad getting to the point where you click on the user account, then enter the password, but getting to the desktop after that seems to take forever.
I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware

Since there are Aol products installed on this computer, Viewpoint will keep reinstalling itself. I suggest you disable the update feature as outlined above.

For the slow start up, I see a couple things that may help.

1.) there are few programs running at startup that are unnecessary. They can be started when needed. These fixes are optional and may improve startup time and overall preformance. These fixes will not remove the progran just stop then from loading on startup.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hp\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
http://www.systemlookup.com/Startup/4268-HPWuSchd2_exe.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
http://www.systemlookup.com/Startup/9914-Qttask_exe.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…ateSched&s=

To implement the optional fixes

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark the lines you wish to fix,

Close ALL other windows/browsers and click Fix Checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

2.) Avast loads early in the boot sequence and will check for updates almost immeadiatly using a ;ot of resouces. You could either search or ask the good folks in the Avast Forum how to delay the update process just a bit to allow other programs some time to load.

Example of delaying the update http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=38393.0

Implement the fixes you want, post back and we'll finish up.

Thanks
I've implemented most of the performance fixes you recommended. I went to Control Panel to make the change in Viewpoint Manager but when I tried to open it I get the message Application Not Found. I timed the startup process from power on to fully up (desktop loaded and systray completely populated). Here are the results: Uninstalled Viewpoint Media Player, set delay for Avast at 3 minutes: 10:53:00 power on 10:53:41 user sign on screen 10:54:15 hit enter after typing password (1 min 10 secs black screen with mouse pointer only, some hard drive activity) 10:57:40 up Removed Java and Quicktime entries: 11:02:00 power on 11:02:45 user sign on screen 11:03:30 hit enter after typing password (1 min 8 secs black screen with mouse pointer only, some hard drive activity) 11:06:20 up The system specs are as follows: Intel core 2 duo @ 2Ghz 1 Gig ram HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop Perhaps the machine is memory constrained? My wife has the same laptop with 2 gig of ram and it is much quicker than this one. Bad thing is I don't have a baseline to work from, so I don't know if it's always been this slow. I'm going to call the owner and ask, may be trying to fix something that isn't broken.
Well, I just talked with the owner, they say it has always been slow on startup, so I guess there really isn't a problem with it. If all else looks good then I'd say it's ok.
Hi wbocock,

1gb ram is the recommended for that version of Windows, but 2gb would help. As you said, we may be trying to fix something that ain't broke.

Everything else looks ok, so we'll clean up.

From your desktop, please delete
  • any notepads/logs that were created
  • Rooter.exe

In Windows Explorer delete C:\Rooter$

Open OTListiT2 then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveIt wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

I suggest you keep ATF and MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it as an on demand scanner.

*We'll reset your restore points

  • Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.
  • Click on the Control Panel menu option.
  • Click on the System and Maintenance menu option.
  • Click on the System menu option.
  • Click on System Protection in the left-hand task list.
  • Create the manual restore point you should click on the Create button. When you press this button a prompt will appear asking you to provide a title for this manual restore point.
  • Type in a title for the manual restore point and press the Create button.
  • Close the System window after you have been advised that the procedure has been successfully completed.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and Ok it
This will remove all restore points except the most recent one.

Updates and upgrades

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 8 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.

* If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

You all ready have an antivirus, resident antispyware, on demand antispyware program and custom Hosts file. I suugest adding a firewall.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.

Click FIREWALL for tips, reviews and links to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware)

Take care :adios:
Well, I went through the cleanup that you suggested, then went to the MS site for updates. It said that SP1 was the only thing needed so I went through the download and install process. When the laptop rebooted, it started going through some kind of update process, then stopped with this message on a black screen; !! 0xc01a001d !! 28205/73545 (\Registry\Machine\Schema\wcm://Microsoft…) I let it sit for over an hour and it never went further. I contacted HP support for help, went back and forth with them for over two hours, cannot get startup repair or system restore to work to get the laptop going again. Their only recommendation at this point is a complete reinstall from the recovery partition, so all of this may have been for naught. They did send me a link to a MS support site for SP1 that is free until 6/1/09, going to give that a shot first to see if they have any suggestions. What a nightmare…..
Hi wbocock,

I'm sorry to hear that. If it's any consolation, I don't believe it to be related to anything you did or we did here. Googling the error turned up a few others in the same boat upon installing SP1.

Windows Vista SP1 is available in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. Other languages will be made available soon.
Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows Update to download and install Windows Vista SP1 on single PCs:
The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x86 is 65 MB (compared to 450 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x64 is 125 MB (compared to 745 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
Windows Update will recognize PCs with known problematic drivers and postpone downloading Windows Vista SP1 until the PC has updated drivers or other applicable updates. Using Windows Update will help ensure you have the most trouble-free update experience possible.
Some Windows Vista users may encounter an issue with a small set of hardware devices that may not function properly after updating a Windows Vista PC to Windows Vista SP1. This is an issue with the way the device drivers were re-installed during the Windows Vista SP1 update process, not with the drivers themselves—these drivers worked on Windows Vista RTM and they work on Windows Vista SP1. This problem is typically corrected by simply uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. We are working with the manufacturers of these devices to get the known problematic drivers and their install programs updated, and also on other solutions we can use to ensure a smooth customer experience when updating to Windows Vista SP1 using Windows Update. For new PCs provisioned with Windows Vista SP1, this is not an issue.
If you choose to install Windows Vista SP1 via the standalone installer available on the Microsoft Download Center, Microsoft advises that you first visit Windows Update and install all optional drivers. Read Knowledge Base Articles 948187 and 948343 for more information.
If you have a prior version of the Windows Vista SP1 beta installed, you must uninstall it prior to installing the final version. Use the Control Panel applet "Programs and Features" and select "View installed updates" from the top left of the task pane. Under Windows, look for "Service Pack for Windows (KB936330).

Good luck
I know it's not related to anything done during the cleanup. I worked with MS both through chat and the phone for almost 3 hours last night trying to get the laptop up and going again. They finally said that without a Vista DVD there was nothing else they could do, and even with the DVD they could not promise that it would not require a complete reinstall. Of course being an OEM machine, there is no DVD, only the recovery partition and a destructive recovery. Fortunately, I talked to the owner last night and they were very understanding about it, I'm going to try to get the files they need off the drive today, then do the recovery. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one that's had the problem, I didn't google the error (wish I had now), I went to the MS support site first, then to HP. Thanks for the update and the links, I'll check them out later today after I get the machine up and running again. I appreciate all the help with this also, it was running a lot better than when I got it at least, if only for a short time.
