[Resolved] Odd behaviour with Windows Live Messenger - Spyware?

The other night I received a message from my partner on Windows Live Messenger (WLM). It looked like a spam message like all the ones I get ad nauseum, so we checked her messagebox for my user and she clearly did not send it. Due to the nature of the message, I'm concerned some sort of spyware has infiltrated her system.

Thanks in advance for any help/guidance.

Hi busdriver12,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

You're looking pretty good. Let's do a couple things.

Your Java is out of date and you have other old versions still on your computer, those old versions are now a security vulnerability:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer - Version 6 update 12

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Sorry for the delay in replying - haven't had much time for pc's here.

Unbeknown to me, my partner did an outstanding Java update and in light of this I thought it prudent to re-scan the machine before proceeding. Just in case there have been changes made which will affect it, I think a re-check may see if any of the recommended actions are now redundant.

Thanks TOMK for your time, and sorry to stuff you around like this.

Phil

G'Day TomK

Please forgive the delay, but I have been having all sort of problems posting here this morning (please disregard the previous post). I have been unable to get text into it despite my inputting text and copying/pasting logs. I tried in both Firefox and IE to no avail. I found I could post on other forums so the problem had to be here. In brief, I disabled the rich text editor and it's all working fine now.

Back to the subject! I took all your recommended actions. The computer (from what I can tell) is functioning normally now.

1 small question: I noticed ATF cleaner performs much the same function as CCleaner. What are the major differences between the two as I have been using CCleaner from time to time as it was a recommended tool from the TomCoyote days.

Here are the 2 logs (HiJackThis first)

Thanks for your time and patience on this one TomK

busdriver12,

Sorry you've had trouble posting. I'm not sure what caused that.

CCleaner does everything ATF does and more. The more is the reason that most helpers here don't recommend it. CCleaner also has a registry cleaner. Registry cleansers can be extremely dangerous. I recommend that you do not use that function.

Nothing we have done has found any malware. Therefore, I must conclude that you don't have any.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.

Thanks for the info. I am aware of it's power and do not use it to make registry changes. Any changes I do make are thoroughly researched beforehand. I mostly find it handy for cleaning up mostly after applications that don't clean after themselves

Thanks for that and great to hear. I'll have to look elsewhere for the cause of this odd behaviour, but this had to be my first port of call. Also thanks for the information of restore points. I've had a rough understanding of how it works, but you've supplied the fine detail I've needed to know. I've know archived this page to my knowledge base :)

Actually, that one of the first things I do when installing a copy of Windows anywhere. It's a pity this is not the default setting and that would save a lot of dramas.

Thanks for the url's and will also add them to my reference base. I've been practicing safe hex for a number of years now and because of that, none of my personal machines has ever been infected.

Yep - all understood and once again thanks for your time and efforts :D
busdriver12,

I should have noted this in my earlier post. If you are still having trouble, I suggest that you post in the Windows forum and let the Tech Team have a try. If you do that, please post a link back to this thread with your post so that they can have access to your logs.

Good Luck and Be Well.
