When I turned my computer on today it had a box for the wallpaper that said "Windows Warning Message" and said I was infected with Win32/Adware.Virtumonde and Win32/PrivacyRemovers, M64.

I attempted several times to run my antivirus and spyware software and would come back to the computer restarting itself and coming up with a blue screen saying "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. It would keep cycling between restarting and this message with different error messages each time. If I turned it off I could restart and it would come up fine and work perfectly until I let it set idol, then about the time the screen saver should come up it would error again.

After sitting in front of the computer making sure to move the mouse occasionally I got both softwares to finally scan and quarantined what they found. It is still restarting and erroring.

Hi lillypadsmom, and Welcome to WhatTheTech

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

You appear to have two Anti-Virus programs running. Avast and Symantec (Norton). Running two Anti-Virus programs at the same time is not a good idea. They can interfere with each other. Please Uninstall one of them. I'm guessing that Norton came with your computer and your subscription expired so you installed Avast. Is this true? If so, please uninstall Symantec (Norton) as follows:

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove any item mentioning Symantec or Norton.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you so much for trying to help.

I did use Norton at one time, but I have uninstalled it and everything mentioning Norton or Symantec in the Add or Remove Hardware. There must be some lingering files somewhere as I know that can be a problem with Norton. If I need to get rid of those files, just let me know how.

Here is the Malware file and new HJT file you wanted.

lillypadsmom,

That got most of it.

Now lets clean up Norton.

Use the link below to see how to run the Norton Removal Tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

And let's see if we(I) missed anything.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Yeah, Kaspersky didn't find anything.

Thank you so much!

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please respond back once more to let me know if you have any questions.
Ok, I created a new restore point but when I paste cleanmgr, it asks what drive I want to clean, not what you posted.

Also, I don't use IE unless I have to which is very rare. I really don't care for it. Last time I only used it so I could make sure Windows was up-to-date. Any advice on using Firefox or Netscape? I use Netscape quite a bit, but I use Firefox alot too. Old habits are hard to break.

Thank you for the info on Firewalls. I use COMODO Firewall. Not sure how this got past it, I wasn't the one using the computer when it happened. I have downloaded Winpatrol also.

One more question. I keep hearing from different people to use different things to keep your computer safe. Right now I have Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster, Super Anti spyware Free Edition, AVG Anti spyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, avast! antivirus, COMODO Firewall and the other programs you've suggested. Do I really need all of these? Any recommendations on what ones to get rid of? It seems that everyone prefers something different so I've ended up with all these programs and not sure which ones to use.

Thanks again.
lillypadsmom,

Ok, I created a new restore point but when I paste cleanmgr, it asks what drive I want to clean, not what you posted.

Sorry for the confusion. Go ahead and select C: drive. The computer will think for a minute or two and then you will get a window that will allow you select the More Options tab.

It seems that everyone prefers something different

Very true. It is definitely confusing. In my opinion you have a good selection there. You don't "need" Super Anti spyware. However it is a good program to run once in awhile just as a check. The same can be done with Malwarebytes that you now also have (which I personally prefer :P). AVG Anti spyware is just not as good of a program as it used to be. I would probably drop it and keep Spyware Guard.

As far as IE goes. It is so integrated with Windows that you use it even if you don't "use" it. It is required to get updates if nothing else so you need to keep it secure even if you don't use it as your browser. I personally use Firefox and am happy with it.

Hopefully some of this helps.
