a screen saver popped up on 8-31-08 that said i had been infected by a virus and to download the Anti-virus2008 to remove it. I refused it and got a bunch of problems as result. I tried downloading several programs from download.com and the programs would not install due to corruptions. I had a friend send them to me through Yahoo messenger and installed Avast Anti-virus, CCleaner, spybot.
the avast scan results were
C: \WINDOWS\system32\trz 29.tmp is infected by win32: Trojan-gen{other}
C: \WINDOWS\system32\tdssadw.dll is infected by win32: Rootkit-gen [RTK]
C: \WINDOWS\system32\blphct5fj0etfn.scr

I used all the programs to the best of my ability to remove them and i just ran a hijackthis scan and would like to know if there are still any problems i need to address.

Hello

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.
i forgot about a few programs that run automatically when windows reboots so the combofix froze up . i think i disabled all but not sure and ran it again here are the results

Can you try this

Download the HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
  • Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
  • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Then try Kaspersky
ok i still cannot access the kaspersky.com site after replacing host file from the link you gave and if there were another host i absolutely haven't got a clue about that . I'm not even sure exactly what a host files function is anyways!
No worries

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

*ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

*NoScript - Addon for Firefox that stops all scripts from running on websites. Stops malicious software from invading via flash, java, javascript, and many other entry points.

*Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
