[2-Sox]

Hi all. Someone suggested I try posting a Hijackthis log here. My first time with Hijackthis and this forum. Somewhat computer illiterate so pls excuse.

Problem: blue screen appears (only noticed so far after periods of inactivity). It says "A problem has been detected and ... PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA ... ***STOP: 0X00000050 (0X83000000, 0X00000000, 0X8286F585, 0X00000000) ..."

Also have adware/spyware detected as "ADW POPUPPER.C" by PC-Cillin ... infected file C:\windows\elose.exe and also a mmov adware/spyware infection - these are problems I will have to address later; just mentioning in case they are related to current problem.

Hi Jerry and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You have a nasty collection of junk, adware, trojans, rogue programs and what not. I'll first show you this:

this program is installed by aol usually without your knowledge and at the very least it is a resource waster, read a litle about it below. I will schedule removal, if you want to keep the junk, that is your call.

Please follow these directions in the posted order, some earlier scans may kill stuff and it may be gone when you get to instructions later on. Just continue on and do not miss anything.

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs > Uninstall: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

(the two trusted zone items are really nasty. With the * they can be hard to remove. If they are still there when you scan for a new log, use safe mode and remove them there, they must go)

6) Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\elos.exe >>> file

7) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how you are running now.

8) When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instructions:

Thanks for your help pskelley. I followed your instructions and posted Hijackthis and Ewido scan results below. As far as how the system is running --- no more blue screens, but I have other problems. I've had to manually turn off the computer four times because it locked up - twice while using IE and twice while my daughter was playing a new game on C: drive (installed from disc - no more downloading of games off the internet). Also, a problem that existed before vanished and then returned: When an attempt is made to enter a new IP address in IE, IE completely shuts down. Strangely, this only happens under ONE of the four user names on the computer. Finally, we had so much trouble trying to purchase and download songs from iTunes (we installed iTunes and iPod software on Christmas), that we had to switch to my new laptop to continue - and we had no problems on the laptop (it shares the same broadband internet connection).

Hi Jerry, I'll look at the logs in a moment, I can't say at this point if these issues are related to malware or not. You said this:

Strangely, this only happens under ONE of the four user names on the computer.

If you have multiple users, the infection can be on any one of them. Start by posting a HJT log for each user, labeled so we will both know what user we are dealing with.

If you look at the original log you will see this item is not here so this junk is still getting on your computer. My suggestion is until we get you cleaned up and some free programs in place to stop these infections, you keep this computer offline as much as possible.

For some reason you chose to ignore everything ewido found??

You need to scan with ewido again and delete what it finds, all of that junk is bad.

Once you remove the BHO above and run ewido removing what it finds, post a new HJT log for this one above and a log for any other user on this computer labeled plainly, along with the new ewido scan report.

Jerry, some of those infections in the user where you had to search for lockx.exe were very bad and we will be lucky if we can remove it this easy. I am looking for information about these in case we need it. You follow all of the removal instruction, then do this:

1) Update your antivirus, once it is updated, take the computer into safe mode and run a complete system scan. Let me know if anything is located that Tread can not remove. I need the full name and pathway of these.

2) While still in safe mode, run a ewido scan and save the results. Often ewido will pick up stuff in safe mode it could not kill while it was running in normal mode.

3) Along with your comments and feedback, post all of the HJT logs again, and the ewido scan results.

Also could not run PC-Cillen Internet Security 2006 in safe mode. Two messages displayed: "No network device was found, or the is a conflict with existing antivirus or security software" followed by "Unable to read the configuration. Restart your computer and try again." I searched all over the Trend Micro site for a solution, but all I found was a mention of this problem in the forum. One person suggested downloading a " virus cleaning / detection utility for DOS that is separate from PC-Cillin, so instead of running in safemode, you can run from either a boot or a terminal window." Apparently it's called the 'Damage Cleanup Template / Engine'. Should I try this? Or maybe another option would be to download McAfee (I have free access through Comcast), but not sure how it would run with PC-Cillin already installed. Any suggestions?

I would follow the directions in the link, download and run Aimfix and most of the other things we have done. Continue with the whole process though. I have never had this infection to deal with, would you post the log/results so I can see what they look like, thanks.

ewido, everything located was removed, Kiana is still picking up bad cookies from somewhere she is surfing. You also must remember to cleanout the System Restore files but I will wait until you are fairly sure the computer is clean. Now understand because we see no malware does not mean this Rootkit is gone. I would use the AIMfix as I suggested. Then I suggest you try a couple of online scans:

Use the ewido scan to see what is showing up, the scanner and updates are free for as long as you like. Remember the ewido security suite does use resources and unless you purchase it, disable it once the trial is over.

Hey Jerry, correct me if I am wrong, but you pay for this product. I have never heard of any antivirus software that you have loaded on your computer that you can not run in safe mode. You do need to update online but that's it. I would be about finding out what the problem is with the Trend Micro tech support.

Virus Scan-
Since I couldn't get the Trend virus scan to work in safe mode (and I didn't want to wait until I could contact tech support), I uninstalled the software and downloaded the free McAfee I have access to. Scanned in safe mode and it found 1 infected file:

It's running a lot better so far. No crashes and the problem I had where I could not successfully enter a new website address in IE under user Nysha is no longer a problem. You will probably have to delete this stuff in safe mode, navigate to them once you boot to safe mode and delete the file in red:

Open HJT then View the list of backups. I would say after this much time you should be able to check the boxes for all backups and delete them.

Make sure you can see all files and folders then open the C:\RECYCLER\ There should be a bin for each user. Open each bin and delete the contents. Do not delete the bins.
