Recently my computer has gotten some kind of problem with it where it's constantly popping up "programs" that are Malware protectors or removers and adds icons onto my start menu. The background of my desktop is unchangeable as well as my screen saver. The background reads "Warning! Spyware has been detected on your computer, Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer." My computers background is in blue and the text comes in a yellow box. Also, the screen saver is of a bunch of bugs eating the desktop.

It added 4 icons onto my start menu which include: Malware Protector 2008, Remove Malware Protector 2008, Advanced XP Fixer, and Register Advanced XP Fixer.

Everytime I restart my computer the "malware protectors" load and say X amount of threats have been found, would you like to remove them?

Here's my log file from hijack this

Hi! Welcome to the forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Could you also please navigate to this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysrest32.exe
and copy it to a zipped folder for me pleasThen click on this link
http://rapidshare.com/
Browse to the zipped folder and upload it then pm me the link.
I couldn't find the file sysrest32.exe in the folder you specified, and I also ran a search on all files and folders for a file containing "sysrest32", but nothing was found. Hi

I should have had you unhide the files first. No matter, it's not important. This bit is.

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have a Dangerous infection on this machine.
The infection is delivered by a Backdoor Trojan.
It allows outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present…
IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. In that instance, even after removal of the infection, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords – for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.
While you are deciding whether to ReFormat and Re-Install, a useful link is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
Please let me know what you decide.
I'm not sure what to do, I don't really have any important stuff on this computer, I only play video games on it so the only accounts I have are those. I would likely restore, but my only problem is that I don't have any kind of recovery discs or whatever they're called used to reformat, so I think I'm kinda stuff out of luck. Which file is it exactly that infected my computer with a trojan? Is it the malware stuff like the XP Fixer and Malware Protector 2008?
It was the one I asked you to upload. It is a Backdoor, and it does connect to a remote server, but its main job is to infect you with more malware, as you have, but because of what it does it's only right I give you the standard warning.
As you dont have the installation cd's we can continue with the clean up.

Before you do, can we have one more go with that file.?

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Then follow the rest of my instructions about up loading that file in my earlier post.

When you have done that, or if you still cant, proceed with these instructions.

If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

Use this link to download Combofix, not one of the three in the tutorial

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once Recovery Console is installed, you should see a blue screen prompt like the one below:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click Yes to allow Combofix to continue scanning for malware.

When done, a log will be produced. Please post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
