In trying to clean up my computer, which is pretty old, I've noticed a lot of files that seem suspicious or are from programs that I thought I deleted. I'm getting a lot of popups from Tea Timer about values being deleted or changed: SCR/REG extension handlers, ginaDLL.

I've also been having problems with the internet connection. Oddly, my mom who has the same cable provider and lives in another city had the same problem - she was told by the cable company that it was Zone Alarm that was affecting the connection. The next day, (after I had restarted the computer), I had the same problem. I have to disable it Zone Alarm, disable the connection, unplug the modem and do a lot of fiddling around to get it going otherwise it says low connectivity or just won't work. I doubt it's Zone Alarm, It seems to have started after I did a windows update.

I followed the geeks to go malware cleaning instructions from the link on the HJT quick start page. I reenabled everything from msconfig as per their instructions although I had disabled lots of suspicious things from there (br0ken.exe for example) which is why I have so much stuff running right now. Here is my panda log (haven't removed anything) and my HJT log. Thanks.

Hello ahelaumakani

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum, sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
FixWareout Subratam
FixWareout Lonny
  • Save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Click Next, then Install,
  • Then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.
Save the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt and post it into your next reply.

Now lets check some settings on your system. For (2000/XP) Only)

  • Go to Start > control panel.
  • If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections.
  • Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl.
  • Left click on properties.
  • Click the Networking tab.
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems

  • Next Go start> Run type cmd and hit OK
  • Type in ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)
  • Type exit hit enter

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<– Don't forget this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

I need to see the Wareout log, the malwarebytes log and before you post a new HJT log, drag HJT to the trash as its an outdated version and download and install the latest version by Trendmicro and post a new log.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Thanks for responding.

1. After I ran fixwareout it said that if I was having trouble with my internet to double-click dnsbak.reg and let my forum helper know. It asked me did I want to add the information in C:\fixwareout\dnsbak.reg to the registry and I said yes. I hope that was what I was supposed to do.

2. I looked at the network settings - the setup was a little different than your instructions but I changed it to "obtain DNS servers automatically". Also did the dns flush.

I'm still having trouble with low or no connectivity when Zone Alarm is running. The local area connection status says connected at 100Mpbs but under activity it doesn't seem to be sending or receiving many packets. If Zone Alarm is on and I attempt to open IE or update a program ZA says: Generic host process for Win 32 services is trying to access [removed]: DNS. The program is svchost.exe. Choosing allow or deny has no effect so I end up having to turn off Zone Alarm. As soon as I do, the numbers of packets sent and received goes way up and the internet works fine.

Here are the 3 logs you requested.

What I would do is to uninstall ZoneAlarm, we can reinstall it when where done.

Do this first…Important

Disable the TeaTimer, you can re enable it when were done if you wish

  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
  • If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  • On the left hand side, Click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer.<–You need to do this for it to take effect

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.
It's running faster already! Can I turn Tea Timer back on now or should I wait until everything's cleaned up? Here are the 2 logs:

Good Morning,

Things are looking so much better  Keep the tea timer disabled until where done, some of the programs I am going to give you to install to help keep you more secure may conflict with the tea timer anyway, but lets worry about that in a bit.

Remove these with HJT,

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

How are things running now??????
OK. Did everything. It's running OK now, I guess as fast as can be expected for a computer this old. Here's a HJT log.

Is it possible to remove extra stuff to help my computer run as fast as possible? Startup lite lists 13 things I could disable. Should I disable through there or here? Also, there are some 016 things I don't use anymore.

One other thing, is this entry OK?

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcRdB7_0_8 -reboot 1

Last night I ran AVG and it said AdbeRdr708_en_US.exe and AdbeRdr709_en_US.exe were Trojan horse Generic10.BHES infections. Could I have possibly d/led a fake version of Adobe?

Hello,

Your log looks fine. That Adobe entry is fine also. You may want to go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any programs that YOU installed and no longer use.

We just do malware removal in this forum but you can post in our other forum for windows issues and someone there can guide you though what to disable at start up.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Microsoft_Windows_f119.html

ATF Cleaner <– Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.
