Hello Gurus,

I was hoping to solve this problem myself but have been unsuccesful, so hope you can help.

My home computer network involves 4 computers. Recently I was advised by my ISP that I was generating lots of spam. Did an AVG full scan and found no virues. Then did a Panda online scan and found 7 virus/trojan detects on one of the machines. The other machines OK. I found that when this machine was connected to the internet, the connection would drop out within the hour and often much more quickly. Cleaned the detects with panda and a Symantec gaobot removal tool. Rescan with panda online showed ok on virus/trojan but plenty of spyware.

So ran latest Spybot and cleaned up the detects. Still have unwanted popups and modem dropout. Then tried latest Adaware but scan causes computer to restart after a short time - during scan of GUID processe. Based on advice on various forums I have then tried vundo/virtumonde fix - no detects. And CW shredder - one detect removed. After reboot Adaware still causes restart.

so my last resort is HJT. Hope you can help. Thanks

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

Your computer is very seriously infected.

W32/Rbot-KL
W32/Rbot-KL is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares and also contains backdoor Trojan functionality allowing unauthorised remote access to the infected computer.

How it spreads: Network shares

Affected operating systems: Windows

Side effects Turns off anti-virus applications
Allows others to access the computer
Downloads code from the internet
Records keystrokes
Installs itself in the Registry
Exploits system or software vulnerabilities

First off all, you need to be informed that your computer might be seriously compromised, you have a trojan of the Rbot/Sbot family, below is a general description of this family. You must be aware that if you have a system that has been completely compromised, the only thing you can do is to flatten the system (reformat the system disk) and rebuild it from scratch (reinstall Windows and your applications)

Backdoor.Rbot is a family of Trojan programs for Windows, which offer the user remote access to victim machines. The Trojans are controlled via IRC, and have the following functions:
  • monitor networks for interesting data packets (i.e. those containing passwords to FTP servers, and e-payment systems such as PayPal etc.)
  • scan networks for machines which have unpatched common vulnerabilties (RPC DCOM, UPnP, WebDAV and others); for machines infected by Trojan programs (Backdoor.Optix, Backdoor.NetDevil, Backdoor.SubSeven and others) and by the Trojan components of worms (I-Worm.Mydoom, I-Worm.Bagle); for machines with weak system passwords
  • conduct DoS attacks
  • launch SOCKS and HTTP servers on infected machines
  • send the user of the program detailed information about the victim machine, including passwords to a range of computer games
Evidence in your log:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN] msnmsgs.exe

I would like to have more information about the Rbot variant present on your machine in order to find out what exactly could have been changed to your security settings and more precise info about what could have been compromised. With this type of infection you may have a rootkit on your computer also. Can you please perform the following:

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.

Submit the file C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe to Jotti's scanner at:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ Post the results here in the next reply.

IMHO, You need to disconnect this PC from the internet and from your network if it is on a network. Use it as less a possible.

What is a backdoor or remote access trojan?
Read this article.
Danger: Remote Access Trojans
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/…o/virusrat.mspx

Can you please post the results of the virus scanner and a new Hijackthis log please since this malware changes very fast especially when you reboot.
Thanks LDT

The problem computer is isloated from the network and the internet while i try and fix it.

As suggested, I have submitted the file C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe to Jotti's scanner. Here is the result.

File: msnmsgr.exe
Status: OK(Note: this file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database)
MD5: c4281ad865739e71fd1e4dac19a68d60
Packers detected: -
Bit9 reports: No threat detected (more info)

However the evidence of a trojan in your post is

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN] msnmsgs.exe - NOT msnmsgr.exe

I tried to find msnmsgs.exe on my computer but only found msnmsgs.msi

So not sure what to do next:

As suggested i have rerun hijackthis after rebooting. here is the log

Thanks LDT. Here is the latest I went through your suggested sequence. I did the ATF cleaner first, then AVG Anti spyware , both in Safe mode I couldnt save the report on the AVG Anti-Spyware scan because the Report Save button didnt become active after the actions were all applied. I can cut and paste the quarantine log if that helps. The scan revealed 90 items, the majority of these were tracking cookies. there was only one high risk item which was Downloader.Agent.bdr The medium risks were Adware.dogpile Adware.surfside Adware.BHO Adware.Newdotnet After rebooting in normal mode I tried to run Adaware and again it stpped and restarted the computer after a short time of scanning. Any suggestions on the way forawrd from here? I do get the sense that the machine is in better shape. Has your previous suspicion on this line from HJT gone away? O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN] msnmsgs.exe Do you want to see the latest HJT log? Any other ideas? I appreciate your help so far.
With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All then Remove Finally Please post a new HijackThis log.
Thankyou to LTD. Sorry I didnt reply over the last few days . I was checking the site but did not pick up your posts because I was looking in My Controls which didnt seem to record the extra posts. (I wasnt checking my emails)

Anyway I have solved the problem so I suggest that maybe this post be added to the original one to close it out, so that others can use it

I found the problem was a rootkit virus.

I removed it by using Rustbfix. You can get an overview and the tools from here

http://www.ejvindh.net/viewtopic.php?t=101

This thing is sneaky and not picked up by traditional antivirus scan.

The various steps suggested by LDT has cleaned up my computer and removing the Rustb rootkit has allowed Adaware to complete its scan without problem.

this is a great forum and really appreciate the help
