I recently updated my graphics driver on my Gateway 510T. The driver updated is the Intel 82865G graphics controller. I updated to the 1416 version released in 2005. All went well and the driver loaded and system operates with one small glitch. Every time I start up or switch to one of the other users and log onyo their accounts I get prompted for these 3 programs to run. !. igfxtray.exe, 2. hkcmd.exe, 3. igfxpcrs.exe I checked and all 3 are listed under programs to be run at start-up automatically, so why after updating my graphics driver am I getting this problem? Any help would be appreciated. All I have to do is hit OK for each every time I start up but it shouldn't be happening, and never has before. I rolled the driver back and the problem still happens so I re-installed the update but that didn't help either, what do I do to get them to load automatically and not prompt me to run them?
Do you happen to be running an ATI Graphics card? After I updated mine with Microsoft Update, these three start-ups immediately popped up into my Start-up. After some decent "research", the three start-ups are not necessary for your OS. These, in my perspective, would be optional. I see them as taking up valuable resources. The start-up programs are much like "hotkeys" or shortcut keys which you can adjust resolution and monitor settings with your keyboard. If you have them active, you should see (well I saw) a ATI LOGO on your taskbar. Welcome to WTT Forums.
Thanks for the info, but it doesn't solve the problem. My computer doesn'y show the prompt you mention and the boot up stops in mid boot to prompt for the 3 applications to be run, they are listed as security warnings and if I close them I can finish booting but then my DEP protection is disabled ,I don't know what's causing this to happen, but for now I have to keep approving the applications to run so I can use the computetr any other ideas? Thanks for the time. bart2201
Alright, but are you using an ATI graphics card? Usually the three start-up programs are associated with this driver. Alright to check out the status of the DEP (Data Execution Prevention), open the Control Panel in the Start Menu. Find "Performance and Maintenance". Click on the SYSTEM icon. Find the ADVANCED TAB. Under the blue-lettered "Performance", click on SETTINGS. Click on the third tab with should be the DEP. It is on by default. Now to see what starts up when your PC boots… run "msconfig" in the RUN (Start menu). In the STARTUP tab there will be list of entries. Now in your favor, you should find the three entries you mentioned in your first post. You should be able to find it. Uncheck it and reboot. See if that solves it.
My graphics card is an intel 82865GV chassis mounted, my system is a Gateway 510T 512MB memory and 2800ghz with a 120GB hard drive. Running Windows XP Home sp/2. We bought it in 2004 and most of the drivers and hardware are now outdated but I was trying to update what I could when the problem occurered. But with your help it seems to be fixed, there was a problem when I used the msconfg to change the settings. I was prompted to do it as a system adminstrator which I already am but I booted into safe and used the administrator log in from there and still got the error messege that I need to log in as administrator, weird but after the reboot all is running fine. What was happening was the driver was not showing all components as digitally signed by Intel, that's why I kept getting asked to run the programs. But now all driver settings and programs show checked as signed and OK. Thanks a bunch, I still don't know how this happened but you helped me to get it resolved once again thanks a bunch for the help. bart2201.
Microsoft Updates should have provided updates to your modem and graphics card drivers. So as a recap: You ran "msconfig" and you were told you can only run it as admin, which you are. You ran into Safe Mode to see if it worked. Is progress? Did msconfig work? Does the messages still show? Like I said Microsoft Updates should have given you the proper updates for optimal performance. windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
drragostea, First I just want to thank you for taking time to answer my post. As to the problem I did run MSCONFIG and all looks well. However Microsoft has never updated any of my drivers or system installed devices. I have tried to hunt some of them down and have rteached the point with this that if it isn't broken don't try and fix (update) it. This applies to the usb drives hub and a few other installed items that no longer offer updates or have been discontinued from Intel or Microsoft. I install what I can find and access and what I see as being absolutely needed to be kept up to date on drivers. I just wish I could get more memory and a much better graphics card, but being an disabled veteran I'm living on $931.00 a month so all that is out the window also, which is why it is so important to me to get a back up disk and image done in case of problems, but I can't get a good clean copy for the Bart PE build off of my OEM XP Home disc it keeps showing errors and warnings, but slowly and surely I'll get them worked out also . Thanks for the help and your time in assisting me getting the updates for my graphics controller installed and running.
I understand. In my opinion, why use such valuable money for a better graphics card when the one I have is adequate for my everyday uses? I still have a old Intel Pentium 4, and it's adequate for my everyday word processing and web browsing. I'm that kind of geeky tech guy, lols. As long there are no more messages and problems, then all is fine. So in conclusion… the messages do NOT pop-up anymore?
No they do not pop up anymore and my system seems to be running fine. Once again thanks for your help and adding a little more info for me to remember in the future. Hopefully I can get the bugs worked out so I can finish building my reboot disk. Have a great day.
Disabling start-up services will be up to the user's decision. Glad to be of help. Should there be any future questions, feel free to ask. :)
