i cant really give much info on this computer except that it is windows xp home. i have tried a few things myself like reformatting the computer/repairing. i set the bios to default thinking that may help. i have tried to start in safe mode but doesnt work. now i do get a blue screen when i go to reformat. i have asked a few friends and they say they think the hard drive is bad but the computer has a thing in the bios that does a check on the hard drive and it claims that its just fine. i dont know much on this computer beacuse a friend called me up and saying it was messed up and brought it to me. im thinking it maybe a hardware problem but i know there are some virus's that prevent starting up and i would like to check all that before i get the computer back to him. the guy has only had the computer for a short time because he bought from a friend for cheap. oh btw its a laptop and i asked how old it might be and he said he bought it brand new last year. hp pavillion zv6000
You said "reformatting the computer/repairing", so that means you formatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP, right? If you can format the drive and install XP then it's unlikely to be a hard drive problem.
The first thing to do is test the memory (RAM) and see if it has a problem. There are two programs that are normally used to test computer memory, Memtest86 and Microsoft Memory Diagnostic. They are available from the following locations:
thanks for the welcome. i tried to do a reformat but when i go to do that i get what most people call blue screen of death. the error on the screen says
a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen aprears again, follow these steps:
check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. if this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
if problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. if you need to use sfae mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select adavanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

i checked in bios to disable what it says but i was pretty sure it wasnt in there before i checked and didnt find it. ive tried safe mode or any other mode i could start it under and it just gets this screen. ive noticed on some of the startups in different modes it will show this screen but only for a sec and restart for me. then other times it will show the screen and make me have to restart.
im trying to do a clean format. i load the cd hit a button to go into the boot menu. when i let it load the files it says repair/new install. either one i choose i get a blue screen of death as most people put it. im going to do one of each and make sure i get the same as i listed before.. im also working on doing the slipstream but nero 6 doesnt like vista much and 8 is being the same way it says 7 doesnt work and im not sure on 8 but i figured i would give it a try i might have to transfer the files to a different computer in my house and throw nero on that computer so i can get it to burn.
Okay, time to try DBAN - Darik's Boot And Nuke, see if that can work with the hard drive. If so, it will wipe it completely, then you can partition it during the XP Install.
dban just finished doing its job and its actually letting me install windows. so im guessing the problem was a nasty virus. thanks for all the suggestions. i do have a question on one thing. can anyone suggest any freeware that i can put on that computer before i send back so i wont have to look at their computer so soon. i personally use avast/spybot/adaware with windows firewall. (i do know windows one isnt all that great or so i been told). if there is any free firewalls please suggest so i can throw on my computer as well. ty
Two Firewalls, that are really good, are Comodo Firewall Pro.3.0 and Online Armor. Both comes free of charge, no ads, no nags etc.
Comodo Firewall Pro.
A really good Firewall, abit complicated for the untrained, and is considered a firewall for people who knows their system and programs well.
Online- Armor
Easy to use, and quite the opposite of Comodo.
There are other firewalls aswell, but these two are top-dogs at the moment! Some of the links above, have a section at the bottom, where you can see other free firewalls.
would u suggest the other programs that i run currently on the laptop? i was told the people who make these were really good. but the info was given to me many years ago. just wondering if they still work as good as they use to.
i dont think they do.. only thing i really notice spybot doing if im not telling it to search for spyware/malware. is watching my registry.
That would be the Tea-timer function, so its Spybot S&D thats doing the real-time protection.
Just went through my earlier post, and saw that I promised a list of Firewalls in one of the links, can see I was wrong. But here is the list (Its not fully up to date) http://wiki.castlecops.com/Lists_of_freeware_firewalls
At the bottom there are a great number of links to lists over freeware security applications. Might be some interesting night-reading among it
