Ok, here goes. I have 1 200 gig hd partitioned into 2, 1 for Win Xp Pro, the other for Win Vista. had the 2 working fine,(Win Xp on C:, Win Vista on D: then had to re format C:, Now can't get Vista to work, do I have to re-install vista to get the boot sequence back? or can I edit a line or 2 to get it to work? tried just adding line into boot in system, properties/environment, but the selection shows up on boot, but does not work, what am I missing?
You can try booting your XP CD and starting the Recovery Console, then enter bootcfg /rebuild. This updates your boot.ini and should allow you to add Vista.

bootcfg has different parameters under the Recovery Console than it does when XP is booted. This MS article describes them:

bootcfg /default Set the default boot entry.
bootcfg /add Add a Windows installation to the boot list.

bootcfg /rebuild Iterate through all Windows installations and allow the user to choose which to add.
