hi,

p2p clients or using a network do not cost anything. very few legit clients have paid versions of their software. there are some that have bundled malware that should be avoided, but bundled malware is hardly unique to p2p apps. One should always know what there are installing to there computer regardless of what it is, p2p client or a Zango game.

You should be concerned about downloading something to your computer off of the network that could be malware. there is much malware distributed via the p2p networks that users can download. with some precautions it can be done safely. ive been using file sharing in linux and windows for years.
i have more info on my website about p2p. its not a how to guide. Most of all: Become informed first. if you dont know what your doing, then don't engage in file sharing.
