Hey Karen,

Please download AVG AntiRootKit Free and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click avgarkt-setup-1.1.0.42.exe to install it on your computer.
  • Follow the wizard to install the program, then allow it to reboot your computer.
  • Open AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta.
  • Click Perform in-depth search.
  • Select all your drives.
  • Click Search for rootkits.
  • If a rootkit is found, highlight all the text in the report and copy it here.
If still there, do not remove the rootkit yet, I need to see what was found.

Create a new Startup List for me too:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config…" button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

Regards,
RatHat
Hi Again Rathat
Can you tell me whats happening here? I ran the AVG Rootkit and it found nothing on either C or D drives.
I ran a new startup list from HJT and it is posted below, however, I am still experiencing slow boot. Do you know or have an idea what is happening? What is the culprit?

Hi Karen,

Can you tell me whats happening here?

You had the signs of possible leftovers of a rootkit, though it looks like you are clean.

You machine could do with an upgrade to the memory you have in it, as I suspect that with the addition of the firewall and AV, the memory you currently have is not sufficient. If you notice the DSS log in post 41, it states that:

Total Physical Memory: 504 MiB (512 MiB recommended).

I would think that an upgrade to 1 GB of RAM would have the machine nipping along.

Now, I would like you to try the Sophos Anti Rootkit scan again as outlined above just to be on the safe side, then post me a fresh HijackThis log.

Regards,
RatHat
Hiya Rathat
Here are the same two warnings when I start the Sophos program:
Warning: Failed to set privilege SeDebugPrivilege. You may not have sufficient access rights.

Not all privileges referenced are assigned to the caller.
Warning: Could not initialize Toolhelp. Please restart and try again.

Access is denied.

The program is running and I will post results (if any) here. Thanks again for all your help and patience.

~~Karen
Additional info - no hidden objects were found with Sophos and here is a new HJT log

Karen,

Below is a list of the optional startups that you can safely disable, if you want to, and a description of what they are for. The choice is yours:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
Part of Intels Common User Interface for chipsets with integrated graphics controllers - which allows user to change different driver properties through Windows User Interface. If the user wishes to have "HotKey" access to Intel's customised graphics properties, it is required, otherwise not. It can be disabled via the Display Properties in the Control Panel

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Lexmark X5100 Series] "C:\Program Files\Lexmark X5100 Series\lxbabmgr.exe"
System Tray application that enables scan or fax functions to run directly from the printer via the buttons. Can be launched from a desktop shortcut. Disable by deleting with HJT

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
Part of Intels Common User Interface for chipsets with integrated graphics controllers - which allows user to change different driver properties through Windows User Interface. Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] "C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\MESSEN~1\YAHOOM~1.EXE" -quiet
Yahoo! Messenger allows you to send instant messages. Available via Start -> Programs. Disable by deleting with HJT

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don\'t need these features. For more info on ctfmon See Here ;en-us;282599 . CTFMON can be disabled from Control Panel, Text & Speech Services.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
Related to GoogleToolbarNotifier from Google Inc. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference. Note: Located in a subfolder of C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier. Disable by deleting with HJT

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog, and some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it usually isn't required - Note: if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show.

With Sophos coming up clean, I am happy that you are in the clear, and should not be concerned about anything else. Run an online scan every week or so, keep your temp files clean with ATF Cleaner, and don't open any links sent by people you don't know, and you should be safe.

Hopefully, this log will have taught you a few things, and can be looked on as a great way to start off your training in the fight against malware!

Best regards,
RatHat
