Below is my Hijack This log. My son was here on Christmas, went to download iTunes to get some music for his nieces Ipod she got for a gift - and low and behold I am infected again!! Someone from this site helped me a year or so ago with this problem and I have been diligent in scanning with Ccleaner and Avg Anti Spyware (Formerly Ewido) however I really am afraid to delve further on my own since I might do more harm than good. PLEASE HELP! Thank you! and I promise when I am cleaned up again I will go to the Tech classroom and learn how to give back to this forum

Hi Karen,

My name is RatHat, and I will help you get through the process of cleaning the malware from your computer.

OK firstly, I need you to print out each post I make so that you can refer to it while we fix your computer. This is because there will be times when you are unable to be online to read my instructions, and I will want you to do everything very carefully. I also need you to follow my instructions in the order that they are given. If however, you cannot carry out one of them, please continue on with the next and let me know what you were unsuccessful with.

Next, I would like to make sure that you can view hidden files and folders;

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders.
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Download ComboFix from Here, Here or Here to your Desktop. (If you already have ComboFix, please delete it and download this new version).

Now physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Save this log to your desktop as Combofix.txt and post it in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner. Note: You must use Internet Explorer to run this scan.

Click the Accept button.

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
- Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display the results if your system has been infected.
- Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

1. Please open Notepad

Click Start , then Run
Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:

Now I am not seeing an AntiVirus or Firewall on your machine (Windows Defender is not that good, but is OK to run alongside a dedicated AV).

Could you install one of the following free AV's:

AVG AntiVirus version 7.5 is free for personal use.
avast! 4 Home Edition another very good free AV.
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition, yet another good free AV.

And also the following free Firewall:

Comodo

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Finally, run a different online scan::

Go to http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan

When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
Click Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

Notes:
This scan will only work with Internet Explorer
You must have administrator rights to run this scan
This scan can take a while, so please be patient

Hey Karen,

Please uninstall the following programs:J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
Java 6 Update 2
Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Go to Start then Settings, then Control Panel
Choose Add or Remove Programs
Remove all of the above

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

Close all other windows before proceeding.
Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
When it has finished, DSS will open two Notepad files: main.txt and extra.txt
Use Save As to save both Notepad files to your Desktop and post them in your next reply.

Note: A copy of these files can be found in you root drive, usually C:\Deckard\System Scanner\

Also, let me know how your computer is behaving now.

RatHat - am I able to remove the following using Hijack This program(see below)? I am unsure what all of them relate to but it seems as if they would be unnecessary. I would like to get rid of the ITunes all together - and QuickTime is a pain…and a couple of them say file missing or no name so I am thinking they are taking up space….we don't use paltalk or incredimail and since the Kaspersky and FSecure Online scanners aren't being used any further - can I remove them also?

I have not seen any more requests announcing the Exploit-ObscuredHtml problem but I also disconnected my filter (Bsafe Online) that was running into it. We haven't removed anything that has that name so I am curious what we are aiming at.

I ran the AVG anti virus and it found and removed like 21 infected objects i think it said. While I am thankful for your help, I would appreciate a little more detail and information on what and why we are doing what we are doing.

Karen,

I am concerned about why you could not run F-Secure scan due to lack of admin rights, this is why I want the DSS scan.

The versions of Java I have asked you to uninstall are old, and have vunerabilities.

You can uninstall Kaspersky Online Scanner, IncrediMail, ITunes and Quicktime via your control panel. Probably the F-Secure scan too.

Run HJT again, and remove:

Hi RatHat I am at work and can access this forum but cannot access my machine until after 4pm. That is why I asked the question after reviewing my logs and before I did the Java deletes. I will do what you have asked immediately when I get home and post the HiJack this log as requested. If you want to tell me how to give myself admin rights on my machine I will try to rerun the FScan again. It downloaded all the files but when trying to run it , I was given a message that I don't have sufficient rights…. Sorry - don't mean to be contrary or difficult - just can't do the scans or test anything till i get home from work. Look for a reply from me around 5pm Central time

Rat Hat!! MAJOR PROBLEMS!! Need IMMEDIATE HELP!!

Since following your instructions and after reboot and download of DSS.exe I no longer have Windows permissions. My PC will boot up; I see my desktop icons however everything I click on tells me Windows cannot access this file or path and I may not have sufficient authority to use this. It even tells me this when I click Start/Shutdown - I am told I don't have permission to shut down the computer!!!!!!! I am able to boot up into safe mode - I am able to boot up without internet, however everything I try to utilize (User Accounts, IE, etc) I am stopped by a brick wall. HELP HELP HELP HELP~~~

I ran logs etc but am unable to open or access anything!

Karen,

Please download RatsCheddar.zip to your work computer. Unzip the it and transfer it to a blank flash drive.

Transfer RatsCheddar.exe to the infected computer while in safe mode, and double click the program to run it.

Check the Enabled button for all except CD Auto Run. Leave this one alone.

Once done, reboot the computer and see if you can get back into normal windows. If you can, post me the DSS logs.

Rat Hat - I don't have a flash drive at home - if i can download it to my work pc (not sure with all the security and firewalls if i can do this) will buring it to a cd work? Additional note: i was able to get the zipped file to my work pc and extract the .exe file which i had burned to a CD. Will this work instead of a flash? Sorry I don't have one Any additional things to suggest and try since once I am home, if this doesn't work, I am stuck on communication till tomorrow…I can print out instructions before leaving work. THanks

Yes, that will be OK. Also it will be better than using a flash drive as there is no chance of the infection jumping across. Be aware that this is a beta program that I have written, so once you are back into normal windows I will delete the link out from my earlier post. Regards, RatHat

I downloaded it to cd prior to you making the fix - do you want me to redo the cd burn or just leave it and not check the auto run?
