Here is the link back to the original forum from which paws referred me: http://forums.whatthetech.com/Reformat_and…728#entry414728

The PCPitstop found nothing and AVG Anti-spyware found nothing (that's why I didn't post an AVG log after running it in Safe Mode as per the instructions on this site).
I have followed all the instructions concerning posting a log here and completed all tasks.

Most of the details are on the link back to the other forum. Please advise if you need me to provide the details here or if you need more info. The computer is running, seemingly fine most of the time; but periodically throughout the day, it freezes, or the mouse cursor jumps around or it won't transfer web pages or programs hesitate before closing. The machine is running a bit slower than it normally does - it's always been very fast.

I've been doing spyware, virus, and adware scans frequently since I've been having all this trouble and was surprised to have found trojans (now three or four times) at different times with different scans. I don't know how they're getting in unless I've got ZoneAlarm configured wrong. I NEVER visit porn sites or other sites that should be dangerous. Only an occassional music download purchased from Walmart.com or ChristianBook.com or a free software program download (and I've become real wary about that).

I ran all scans today and think I've got everything clean, but I'm not sure. Paws thinks I may have a conflict with too many spyware programs. If so, please advise which ones to keep and which ones to uninstall. Everywhere you look you read different opionions - some say have several while others say run 1 virus and 1 spyware, so I'm not sure what to do about that.

Anyway, thanks for your assistance. I really appreciate any insight you can give. Here's the HiJackThis Log:

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1. WeatherPulse by Tropic Designs is free of spyware/malware and is good replacement for anyone using Weatherbug. It's free.
http://www.tropicdesigns.net

2. Beings your using Zone Alarm firewall, make sure windows firewall is shutdown.
Click Start> Control Panel> Security Center

3. I see 3 anti-spyware programs but not any anti-virus programs.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove 2 of the 3 and weatherbug:
Ad-Aware 2007
Spy Sweeper
AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
WeatherBug

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

I don't see a anti-virus program running. Get this free one.

Click HERE Click the Download Now and Save, Install, Update and run a full scan.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Greetings, and Happy Thanksgiving, BTW. I needed to ask one question before posting another HiJackLog: This system is running Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite, which includes an Anti-Virus program. It reports that it is running. Do you still want me to download the other AV before posting another log? If not, do you want me to run ZA AV and then post another log? Also, I have tracked down some info reguarding the blue screen STOP errors I've been getting. Paws sent me to a page explaining Stop errors and it seems there's a conflict with XP and some files left over by an uninstalled program called Easy CD Creator and possibly by some related software still installed called Sonic RecordNow and Sonic DLA. This causes CD's not to be recognized and often causes STOP errors. Didn't want to do anything about it until I heard from you, and I'm not sure if deleting them would destroy my DVD/CD drivers. Will wait before posting, Thank you so, so much! Sharon (LostInCyberSpace)
As per your instructions:

Changed Folder View
Uninstalled Spy Sweeper and AVG Anti-Spyware
Uninstalled Weatherbug
Ran Anti-Virus
Ran ATF Cleaner
Rebooted

However, I wasn't sure you wanted me to install the other weather program yet, so I haven't done that.

Thanks IMMENSELY for your help!

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK, the computer seems to be running normally. I opened and closed a few programs and they seemed to initiate and shut down promptly. It will take some time to check everything out, though.

Thanks again!

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.

    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
OK, thanks a million, LDTate! I've created a new restore point; changed the Folder View back; checked all the Internet Settings and found 1 to change and saved the changes. All my security programs, firewall, AV, anti-spyware are set to automatically update as often as is allowed for each program. SpywareBlaster and SpyBot are installed and updated, along with Komodo BOClean. Have added IE-SPYAD and Zoned Out. I didn't see anything else I needed to do with those as the sites listed have appeared in my Interned Blocked Sites list. Windows Updates are set to automatic. Also, I read the information you suggested and followed their recommendations. Is it OK now to go back to Windows Forum and get help with uninstalling the programs conflicting with XP? I greatly appreciate your help. May many good things come your way! Sharon (LostInCyberSpace) P.S. I leave it to you to close this thread and mark it solved. Thanks again.
