Hello fellow technological wizards,

I've been experiencing ongoing computer troubles since January 13th when my computer was attacked by multiple viruses/trojans/ect. Since then I have taken steps to remove such problems but to this day I am still having lots of problems. For instance:

- my taskbar freezes at random times
- my entire screen freezes almost every few thirty seconds
- my computer has become somewhat sluggish is performing acts
- my Microsoft Word has suddenly stopped allowing me to type in it
- my desktop image never loads whenever I boot the computer. Instead, I get this error which I have to click just for it to load
- and just recently, my mouse has been going haywire, such as when i'm trying to look at a page, it will want to scroll down

If anyone of you geniuses can help this hapless fella out, I'd give you a high-five and a handshake.

Here's my HijackThis log file:

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

3 Anti Virus program running.
You seem to have 3 anti virus program s running. this is a bad idea.
They will fight for resources, conflict with each other and provide you with much less protection.
I strongly urge you to remove 2 of them through add/ remove programs now.
Keep one that you have a subscription to and updates itself.

Removing some of these will help with some of the lag issues you have described.
If you decide to remove the System Mechanic Professional 7 antiVirus you may keep thier firewall if you can do that without keeping the anti Virus. The firewall is a good thing .

AVG7… Authentium\AntiVirus…System Mechanic Professional 7\AntiVirus

1. Download Combo fix from one of these locations.
* IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

2. Click start/run and copy and Paste this in exactly using the picture below for reference:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]

3. Combo will begin to run DO NOTHING while this is happeneing.
  • It will kill a few processes and disconnect you from the internet.
  • If by chance it stops prematurly you can re-establish your internet connection by restarting your computer.
  • This needs to be done so the program can work most efficiently for you.
Do not attempt to use the internet or anything else while it's doing its job for you.

If when it's completed you can not get on the internet just reboot the computer

Post the log from comboFix for me located in
c:\comboFix.txt

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from ComboFix
Hi, bob4. Thanks for helping myself deal with the problem.

I saved ComboFix to my desktop, pasted the text in as in the picture reference, and ran ComboFix. My computer rebooted afterward, but there is no log file. I've looked in the folder located in C:\ but there's no .txt file. I used run and pasted c:\comboFix.txt within the box, but it says the file doesn't exist on my computer. Should I rerun the operation once more?

((As a side note: after running ComboFix, the clock on my computer went haywire and now the time/dates are messed up.))

Anyhow, here's my HJT log. (let me know what to do for the ComboFix log)

I still see 3 anti virus programs running. Have you attempted to remove one ? Honestly your receiving much less protection this way.

If you need help in removing them please let me know.

Not sure what happened to the log. But possibly the next log will tell me.

combofix.exe

2.Close all open windows
3. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
4. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply . (c:\comboFix.txt)

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Be paitint towards the end the it will look like it's finished the log will Pop open on it's own when it's done.

Combo fix in order to be effecient is going to disconect you from the internet. If when it is done and you can't get back on the internet just restart the computer.

Please post the log from Combofix
I attempted removing the iolo antivirus program last night, and it doesn't appear in the processes anymore.

I attempted removing the iolo antivirus program last night, and it doesn't appear in the processes anymore.

.
Do you mean iolo anti virusdoes not appear in add remove programs any longer ?
It still appears in Add/Remove programs. It says the uninstall.dat is missing therefore cannot uninstall, but I uninstalled it through iolo System Mechanic Professional 7.

Good enough for me.

Looks good .
Kaspersky only found things in system restore points. There safe there until we take care of them.Which we will in a while.

Just 2 questions:

1. How long have you had all those anti virus programs installed ? << This is for my own curiosity .

2. How are things running now ?
I've probably had the iolo antivirus installed for a tad bit over a year now, and I downloaded AVG in it's place not too long ago. I noticed on the HJT log that the iolo antivirus was still a start-up item, despite me uninstalling it, but I disabled it from starting-up whenever Windows does. Things have improved greatly. Everything is functioning as it normally was. Such programs as Microsoft Word are working once again, and there's no longer any freezing. The only thing I've noticed is that sometimes my internet (the internet explorer server, not the actual modem) will randomly shut off. I think this problem might have something do with the iolo antivirus. So we'll see how that turns out now that it's disabled. (also, nothing major but the time is still as it was after ComboFix ran)
Great news ! [external image: Posted Image]

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.

Go to start > run and copy and paste this in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the
system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)
Awesomeness. Thanks muchly, Bob. *high-five* One last quick thing, after uninstalling ComboFix, the clock/date settings remained the same. Should I just go ahead and reset them myself?
I got the clock set back to the original settings, we'll see if they remain that way the next time I restart. Unfortunately, some the previous problems I listed (Microsoft Word, and other programs not functioning correctly) are returning to their prior state. I have no clue what's going on here. I haven't done anything all day to my computer to cause any of this. Everything was working perfectly fine.
