I just moved and I have an unusual dial-up connection problem and I suspect some type of malware.
When I connect my computer phone line for dial-up, after 21 seconds a signal is sent from the computer thru the phone line that results in the recorded message “If you would like to make a call please hang up and dial again. This is a recording, DPDS1”. This message repeats 3 times and then the phone line goes dead and none of my home phones have a dial tone. If I disconnect my phone line from the computer, it is if I had hung up an off the receiver phone and my dial tone comes back and all my phones work again. If I don’t plug in my computer phone line, I never have any problem and all my phones work fine. Somehow after connecting my computer phone line, after 21 seconds it is automatically sending tone dialing signals that result in the recorded message. The other odd thing is that with my computer phone line disconnected, I open my Outlook Express to dial out THEN plug in the connection line (before the 21 seconds) and my internet connection works fine and there are no problems.

I have run Spybot, Ccleaner, Ad-Aware, AVG Anti-Spyware and A-Squared and have not found any malware with any of these.

I am running Windows XP service pack 2.
Any suggestions?

ClaudeC,

Welcome, sorry for the delay.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

The rest of your log looks fine, what I would do is run this free online virus scanner and if it comes up clean than I will link you to some windows support sites that deal with the issue that your having.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

You have a lot of bad entries in your Norton Quarantine folder, I would open Norton and go to the Quarantine folder and delete it all.

This appears to be a problem with either your modem , your phone lines and possibly your ISP.

I suggest you call your ISP first and ask them for help
If its not on there end try calling the manufacturer of your modem and see if they can help.
You say you moved, it could be old wires in your phone line, maybe have the phone company come out and check them.

You can also post here for help, as this is a forum for removing malware only I cant help you any further.
