Problems with Computer Management Utility
5 min read
Sorry to hear about the problems you are having. It may be likely that these problems are related. I want to check which services are running on your system. Please perform the following steps to determine this information:
- Copy the following text by highlighting it and pressing Ctrl-C:
SC QUERY state= all |FINDSTR "DISPLAY_NAME STATE" > "%userprofile%\desktop\services.txt"
- Go to Start | Run, type cmd and press Enter
- Click the [external image: Posted Image] image button in the upper left portion of the window title bar and choose Edit | Paste
- Press Enter to execute the command
- There is now a services or services.txt text file on your Desktop; please attach this file to your subsequent post

If you haven't resolved the virus problem, you should read the instructions and post a HJT Log into Malware Removal, here:Recently my system was infected with a virus through a Pen-drive..

The Defrag Problem can be caused by several factors
Consider the following:
Run your Error Checking Tool - CheckDisk
Try Defrag againStart - Run - (type)cmd - Enter
This will bring up a DOS style box with blinking cursor,
At the blinking cursor, type:
chkdsk /f /r - Enter <— notice the required space before the "/"s.
CHECKDISK will inform you that it cannot be run because files are in use/locked, etc. and will invite you to allow CHECKDISK to run the next time you reboot your machine.
Type "Y" for yes, and then reboot.
The scans will take about 30-40 minutes, after which your machine will complete its boot into Windows.
You may be good-to-go after the CHKDSK, if it finds any bad-clusters and moves files to known good areas of your hard drive. However, if CHKDSK does find bad-clusters and moves files, it may be necessary to run CHKDSK a 2nd and even 3rd time, until all the bad-clusters are found and all of the affected files are safely moved.
If defrag doesn't respond:
Run your System File Checker:
Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow - enter <– notice the required space in front of "/"
This will open a progress panel for Windows Protected Files Manager and show the progress as your Operating System files are scanned for "missing or corrupted" files.
If SFC does identify missing or corrupted Operating System files, it may ask you to insert your Windows XP installation CD so a fresh copy of the correct file can be copied and pasted into the system files.
If you do not have your Windows XP installation CD, or if errors in the process occur, please post back with specifics or questions.
SFC scan and replacements take about 8-12 minutes depending upon the size of your file tree and the speed of your CPU/RAM.
If SFC opens, and then closes within a few seconds or under one minute….. It did not complete, and must be repeated.
Sometimes, a second scan run of SFC is necessary, even if SFC completes the first time, in order to replace all missing or corrupted files. If SFC completes, you can safely run it a second time for good measure.

Unable to connect to the Logical Disk Manage
Try the following:
GoTo:
Start - Run - (type)services.msc - Press Enter
Scroll down thelist to Logical Disk Manager <– what is the Status & Start Up Type ?
Logical Disk Manager should be Status = started, Start Up Type = automatic
If Logical Disk Manager status and type are different on your machine, double-click to change them as indicated above.

What is it that you are wanting to do in Logical Disk Manager?
Thanx for ur help.Really appreciate the effort….
I ran the Disk Check as u asked me to do.I guess there were no bad-clusters and no movement of files…
Post this I tried the Defrag, but the same problem persisted…
Then in the Command Promt, I typed the Command for the "System File Checker" i.e. sfc /scannow
I got a negative reply as shown below -
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>sfc /scannow
Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.
The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable.].
Awaiting a reply from u…
Thnx & Regards,

The relevant Services look OK to me.
That leaves the possibility that your machine is still infected.
Have you posted to a Virus/Spyware Malware Removal Forum for assistance with the previous infection you mentioned?
if not, consider posting here:
Read these instructions: http://forums.whatthetech.com/Welcome_New_…ers_t34502.html
Post here: http://forums.whatthetech.com/HijackThis_L…emoval_f27.html
(Note: please do not post a HJT Log here in this Forum, as we do not analyze/fix HJT Logs in Software/Hardware Forums)
Or,
Perhaps Ax238 will spot something in your attached file of Services.
Please explore this possibility:
open Regedit
Make sure you have Exported a backup copy of your Registry for safety first.
then navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\
Winlogon
Look for the SFCDisable key and make sure its value is set to 0 (Zero)
Reboot and try SFC/ Scannow again

As I suspected, based on your services file, the "DCOM Server Process Launcher" service is stopped. This is also why you can't access the System File Checker. Please run the following command at the command prompt:
sc config DcomLaunch start= auto
After this is finished you should get the following message:
[SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS
If you didn't receive this message, please let me know. Either way, restart your computer once completed. Let us know the status of your system upon completion of these instructions.
EDIT: The same thing can be accomplished by going to the services menu, double-clicking "DCOM Server Process Launcher", and making sure it has a Startup type value of "Automatic".

Ax
