Hi jonregester,

First an apology.
I've been totally distracted with other responsibilities here.
At this point, I've probably lost track of your status and progress.
I'm sorry.

In the event that you wish to continue, please give us a general update and any specific questions/concerns that you may currently have.
_________

Good news about the "beeping". Are you still free of the beeping?
_________

Next,
You are correct about the buttons in "autoplay".
Only one can be checkmark/ticked at a time.
Apparently neither selection is providing the function that you are looking for.
____________

Good work on
Uninstall/reinstall DVD reader and ide controllers
Sorry that didn't fix the situation.
___________

Have you run your Microsoft System File Checker?
Let's see if maybe some System Files have become corrupted or gone missing.
________________________________________________________________________________
______________

Run your Windows File Protection System File Checker.

Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow - enter <– notice the required space in front of "/"

This will open a progress panel for Windows Protected Files Manager and show the progress as your Operating System files are scanned for "missing or corrupted" files.

If SFC does identify missing or corrupted Operating System files, it may ask you to insert your Windows XP installation CD so a fresh copy of the correct file can be copied and pasted into the system files.

If you do not have your Windows XP installation CD, or if errors in the process occur, please post back with specifics or questions.

SFC scan and replacements take about 8-12 minutes depending upon the size of your file tree and the speed of your CPU/RAM.
If SFC opens, and then closes within a few seconds or under one minute….. It did not complete, and must be repeated.

Sometimes, a second scan run of SFC is necessary, even if SFC completes the first time, in order to replace all missing or corrupted files. If SFC completes, you can safely run it a second time for good measure.

Hello again The beeping has still stopped thanks for that. ok i ran the Windows File Protection System File Checker and a warning window came up it read " Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the dll cache insert your windows professional cd-rom now. I don't have a Windows XP installation CD as the machine didn't come with one. Computer behaviour latest. Autoplay function still not working Camera no longer recognised Can no longer log in to loginnet.passport.com Thanks for your help appreciated.
OK. Getting that error message is actually a good indication of a step in the right direction.
Because, it means that SFC actually did find at least a first System file that has become corrupted or was not in place.

There are a couple of work-arounds for this situation.

1.
If you have a friend who has the installation CD for the same version of Windows XP, you can borrow and safely use the CD.

2.
If not, here is a more complicated (because there are more steps to take and things to do) solution that will work.
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Read the entire page of instructions, probably print them out, and follow each section step-by-step until you get a good Run with SFC.

Feel free to post back with any questions that crop up.

And, of course, we always welcome your follow-up comments once you get the problem solved.
Others will learn from your success.

Hi I struggled with the instructions in the link you sent me. I don't have an installation cd for windows xp and the article keeps asking me to use it. I found the folder called 1386 and changed the source path to C:\ it was D:\ should I now change it back ? Everything else in the registry looked fine Unless i have missed something. The website via the link was quite helpful for someone with an installation cd but I am now at a loss what to do. Thanks again for helping me

Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the dll cache insert your windows professional cd-rom now.
I don't have a Windows XP installation CD as the machine didn't come with one.

Hi jonregester,

You previously posted the above.

Does your machine Run XP Professional or does it Run XP Home?

I ask, because there is a correctable glitch on some XP Home installations that incorrectly calls for XP Professional.
If that's the case we can correct it.
____________

Did you create the Recovery Disk set when you first bought the machine?
The necessary file - i386 will have been created into those Recovery Disks.

If you did not create the Recovery Disks, you may still be able to do so now.
You only get "one" opportunity to Create Recovery Disks, so be certain you have blank disks available and that you've read up on the manufacturer's procedure steps for Creating Recovery Disk set.

It is also possible to request a Recovery Disk Set from the manufacturer.
HP/Compaq will do so for a small fee.
I've seen instances where Dell will send the XP installation CD and Driver Disks for free.

What Brand/Model is your machine?
Hello again Ok I now have a disc and have found the 1386 folder, I am however a little scared about what to do next. The instructions via the link you sent me reads You will need to get your XP CD and locate the folder called: I386 This is a major folder and should be one of the first you see, now copy this onto your hard drive into the system root. For most of you that is going to be C:\ so you should end up with a folder that looks like: C:\I386 when it says copy this on to your hard drive do i just copy and paste it on to my desk top I don't have a clue what copy it into the system root means. Will it be ok considering I already have a folder of the same name on my hard drive will it overwrite it ? Sorry to be a nuiscance

Being willing to learn is NOT a nuisance. :)

Glad to hear that you were able to obtain a XP installation CD.
It must be the same type (Pro or Home) as your installed system.
_____________

Since the System File Checker gave you the alert that it required the XP CD, that indicates that some System Files are either missing or corrupted. It also indicates that it was unable to find the original replacement… so it called for the CD.

Copying the entire i386 folder from the CD and placing it on your C:\ Drive, and then changing the Registry item to direct SFC to C:\ is the correct thing to do.
__________

No do not put it on your Desktop.
Save it directly to C:\
_______

It is OK to allow it to overwrite the present C:\i386, if there is one.

Hello again Sorry for the delay but I needed to be sure of a few things before replying to you in particular whether my pc's behaviour had changed at all. Ok this is what I have done. I copied the 1386 folder on to my C drive I then ran scannow and good news it ran ok with no warnings. But my autoplay option is still not working and my pc still won't pick up my camera. Do I need to go back throuh some of the earlier steps you talked me through / Or is there another option ? Thank you again for your patience
Greetings Doug and jonregester

May I suggest a microsoft tool called Autoplay Repair Wizard

Here is a link and see what it does for you

Autoplay Repair Wizard

Regards

Kaz.

IT WORKED !!!!!

Well what can I say lets start with thank you.
Thank you Doug for your never ending patience thank you kat for the link that finally sorted everything out.
For anyone else that may be reading this I used autofix for everything I plugged in to my pc. My phone my camera and it seemed better if you ran it for each individual item.

One other thing Doug I am interested in helping others via this site but I seem to be having some trouble.
When I click on the contact us link (which I am lead to believe you have to do before being considered) via the home page of this site I get a window saying "connect to loginnet.passport.com"
When I type my user name and password in to the box it won't accept it.
This is the same user name and password that I use for my hotmail account.

I am keen to get more involved as I truly appreciate the help that I have been given and would like to give something back so to speak.

Thanks again
