Hi
I have had terrible problems for a while now (comp randomly beeping, things firing up when i don't want them to etc etc)
Blade81 was helping me but came to the conclusion that I didn't have a virus.
He then referred me here (see post below).
Do I wait to be contacted or should I start things moving myself ?
Apologies if this is the wrong way to go about things
My pc dropped the driver for my modem this morning I had to re install it.
My media player keeps firing up for no reason.
My volume control keeps returning to mute !
And my pc keeps beeping
Hi
Yes basically things are firing up unannounced
caps lock, number lock, media player, search facility, volume keeps going to mute
and my pc just won't stop beeping it's driving me mad.
Thanks for the reply really appreciate it.
and my pc just won't stop beeping it's driving me mad.
aside from being annoying, beeps may provide coded information.
This is usually the case during the Boot Up cycle, but may be at other times too.
Is this a constant-never-stops beeping - (beep-beep-beep-beep…)
Or is it a single beep, like what sometimes occurs when pressing the wrong key or clicking on an unavailable selection?
When do the beeps occur? (When I - [do something] - the machine beeps one time)
What are you attempting to do when the other unwanted events occur?
__________
Please look in Control Panel - Keyboard - Hardware(tab)
The only device that you should have in their would be: Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard Double-Click on that Device, or highlight it and Select - Properties
Properties should read: "The Device is working properly"
__________
From Control Panel - Select - Systems Select - Hardware(tab) - then Select - Device Manager
There should be no yellow or red warning signs <— if there are any please let us know what items are involved.
There should be not items under the topic "OTHER" or items listed as "Unknown"
We need to gather a bit more information before knowing what to recommend.
Thanks for answering the above questions as specifically as you can.
Hi
Firstly thank you for your reply and the help you are trying to give me.
The beeps usually come in two's (beep beep) and can happen at any time even when the computer is on but unattended or indeed when I am sat at it.
The unwanted events usually occur if I leave my pc unattended I'll give you an example.
Last night I left my pc on
I left a program running called convertx to dvd (it converts divx movies to dvd format).
I was not connected to the internet.
When I got up this morning the "my computer" facility had fired up
The search facility had fired up
Internet explorer was displaying the page that says "unable to display this page"
The program i was trying to run had seized up.
I looked inControl Panel - Keyboard - Hardware checked out the keyboard and everything looks ok only my keyboard showing and it says it is working ok.
Went in to device manager no red or yellow warning signs or items listed under other or unknown.
Thanks again
In either/both cases, the setup configuration of the utilities may have "check for update" features that attempt to connect to the Internet. Please investigate in the appplication "Options" or "Help" features to see what may be Selected.
***Note: If the utility is working satisfactorily, you may never need to update unless a vulnerability is discovered. With many/most applications of this type, I would disable any automated "check for updates" feature, and just do any tweaking/updates on a manual basis as needed.***
Reviewing your example…. It "could be" that after a period of running last night, the automated function for consulting the Internet home site of the application for updates "kicked-in". Not finding a Network Connection (you weren't connected to the internet), your IE tried to connect, failed and then displayed the "unable to display this page" message. Windows Explorer may have kicked in the Search Function, if the application has automated functions enabled, but no Internet Connection, looking for the correct executable file to make it happen. Again, check what "automatically check…." selections you may have Enabled in that application.
__________
If there are other instances of applications associated with the unwanted behavior, please explore them similarly as described above, and/or list them for further research here.
If it seems that I am totally "off base" with this line of inquiry, please correct me, or add your ideas so we can take another direction of research.
Hi again and thanks.
Ok the program I run is the first one on your reply "convertXtodvd"
I checked to see which options had been selected and found under settings, a box which said "check for internet updates regularly" which was un checked so I left it as it was.
There was another box "do not prompt for updates" which was also unchecked I therefore put a tick in this one so as to stop it prompting me.
These were the only options I found.
Last night I ran spybot and my antivirus both in safe mode and neither found anything.
I appreciate your help but am at a loss to suggest what to do next My only guess is that there is something running in the background on my machine that shouldn't be. Could there be something that may show up if we look in task manager ?
When Blade was helping me he said I didn't have a virus but one of the entries in my hjt log which he told me to get rid of keeps appearing could this be the problem ?
I can only grasp at straws I am totally in your hands and if it weren't for the likes of you I don't know what i'd do so thanks.
Machine behaviour latest.
Still beeping
Now throwing me off the internet for no reason
Programs still fire up randomly.
*** Please do not make any changes with this utility until we review the listing.***
Double-Click on CodeStuff Starters Icon to Run it.
You will see the Starter Panel with (3) three main Tabs
Please Select the StartUps(tab)
Then go to the Command Line at the top of the Panel File - Save As Plain Text
Give the plain text notepad file a name you can easily remember and Save it to your Hard Drive.
Please Copy/Paste the entire contents of that Plain Text file into your next Reply here in this Thread.
Hi jonregester,
Thanks for posting the Startups list. We'll get to that in a minute, but first a different consideration…
(Please tell us if this is a laptop of desktop)
The kind of difficulty of unwanted events that you describe, could be caused by a Hardware Problem of your Keyboard.
Do you have a spare PS/2 Keyboard that you could try out for a while to see if the problems disappear when using a different keyboard?
______________
You do have some "unnecessary" but "harmless" items running from StartUp,
Probably not enough to be causing your problem, but may be interesting to see if you get a performance improvement.
__________
Do you use personally configured Keyboard combinations for special control of media and internet functions?
(you would know if you set specific keys. I am not referring to regularly available volume control, run media, access internet keys that may already be available on your keyboard)
If not, you can consider disabling: (Enable Labtec Wireless Desktop.lnk - MagicKey.exe)
__________
Do you have Nero set to run automated backups of your System?
If not you can consider disabling: NBJ Nero BackItUp Scheduler /and NeroFilterCheck
______________
Do you regularly use "special text handling" for translation of Thai/other asian languages? Or do you have special need accessibility considerations in your computer use. (for example, handicap access)
If not you can consider disabling "ctfmon.exe"
How-To: To disable ctfmon.exe, Open Control Panel, Click on Regional and Language Settings
Select the Language(tab) then Select the Advanced(tab) then Click the Details(button)
Place a checkmark/tick in "Turn off advanced text services"
___________
The Google Updater and Google Notifier are generally nuisance/unnecessary functions and can be Disabled.
__________
Be sure NOT to Disable your NOD32 (this is your antivirus and necessary for safe operation)

Please keep us posted with your progress.
Best Regards

Hi Doug
I trust your weekend was good. Thanks for getting back in touch.
I am using a different keyboard as we speak and will let you know how I get on.
My computer is a desk top by the way.
No I don't use personally configured keyboard combinations and have done as you said and disabled Enable Labtec Wireless Desktop.lnk - MagicKey.exe.
I have also disabled the "nero check" box.
As well as the "ctfmon.exe" box. And the other functions you mentioned.
Computer behaviour update.
Yesterday I tried to upload some pictures from my camera which is installed on my pc.
The comp didn't pick up the camera.
This has never been a problem in the past.
I un installed then reinstalled the camera.
Still no luck.
After some further investigation I discovered that the problem is most likley that the autoplay function on my pc no longer works.
If I put a cd or dvd in to my dvd reader the computer no longer gives me the box that says "select an action to perform"
This is what I tried
Right clicked on my computer
Selected the drive I wanted (in my case "eDrive)
Right click on that drive
Selected properties
Clicked the autoplay tab
Checked prompt me each time to choose an action
Clicked apply
I done this for music files/pictures/video files/mixed content/music cd/dvd movie.
But still the computer doesn't give me the "select an action to perform" box.
I am at my wits end however I do appreciate all the help you are giving me.
* "prompt me each time to choose an action" is selected at the bottom of the "Actions" function on the AutoPlay(tab)
Above that item, at the very top of the "Actions" function is an additional selection with a radio-button to be marked.
it is labeled: "Select an action to perform"
It must also have a black dot in the radio-button.
Does it?
Can't guarantee that the above recommendation will "fix" your problem, but it is a necessary component of the eventual "fix".
Same comment for the links.
They all "generally" address your type of problem, and/or describe how to fix something similar or to do the reverse (ie: disable autoplay)
You may get an insight from one of the links that leads you to investigate specifics on your machine.
Please post back with your progress.
And of course, if you discover a solution, we'd sure like to hear about your success.
Hello again
The button in the autoplay function that reads "select an actiont to perform" does not have a black dot in it.
The button at the bottom reads "prompt me each time to choose an action" and has a green dot in it.
It will only allow me to put a dot in one of them not both.
I looked in "Shell Hardware Detection" and it looked like everything is ok it read "started" and "automatic"
I am about to go through the links you sent me I will let you know how I get on.
Thanks again for your help.
Hi Doug
Good news and bad news first the good news !
The beeping has stopped and (touch wood) things have stopped firing up randomly.
Thank you for that.
ok
Now the bad news
I clicked on all the links you sent me my windows is up to date
update automaticaly is turned on
Everywhere I look auto play is enabled even in the registry settings that your links directed me to.
I uninstalled my dvd reader and writer today then reinstalled them still no luck
I then uninstalled my ideata/atapi controlers still no luck
Thanks for your patience
