Dear Genius and Generous Computer Techs,

I've been having problems with my Dell printer so I contacted them through chat and we uninstalled and reinstalled and- Well, you get the idea. The Dell rep "thinks" the OS is corrupted and wants to reinstall the OS because the computer was running slow when he was doing his thing. A restart was taking 10 - 15 minutes and everything was loading sloooowww. But I had just installed Norton and it had yet to complete a full scan when the Dell rep first started working on the computer. I also had like 60 programs on the quick start menu because someone had told me that it didn't eat up memory. I also had a zillion applications installed. After completing the first full scan with Norton, removing the shortcuts from the quick start menu, removing all unnecessary applications, and running defrag, Norton Windoctor, Spybot, AdAware, and disk cleanup- the computer now runs as fast as when I first got it (Imagine that! I knew I needed to do some maintenance . . . . . ).

BUT- There are still problems. As far as the printer goes- I've tried everything. But it's Dell's problem really. I'm just afraid when I speak to him on Monday or Tuesday he is still going to insist on reinstalling the OS- and that's just not going to happen. He has jumped to a conclusion (I watched everything he did and there is just no way that he could determine that the OS is corrupt by what he did and what he looked at!), he just wants an easy fix for the printer. I have too many irreplacable apps and files on my computer for an OS reinstall. Not going to happen.

Problem # 1: I'm afraid that they (Dell) are going to try and void the warranty on the printer if I don't let them do an OS reinstall. As I've said- since I've done the maintenance mentioned above the computer runs like it did when I first got it! The tech really didn't see enough to accurately determine whether the OS is corrupt (unless he can tell from the add/remove programs window in the Control Panel . . . . . ). I'd really like to know what you guys think about whether or not my OS is corrupted (from what you can see in HiJack This).

Problem #2: Despite upgrading to Norton 2007 and having Spybot Search and Destroy, and AdAware- I'm still getting the same spyware over and over again: Doubleclick, Mediaplex, and other common spyware- Norton misses completely- but it gets picked up and fixed by Spybot. Is there any way to put an end to this? Is there something on my computer that makes it succeptible to these same viruses? There are about a dozen and it is always the same ones! (P.S. I also reinstalled Spybot just in case there was a problem with it).

Can you help me please ! ! ! !

Hi schlackeye and welcome to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • NOTE:Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.
In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start, if possible.

With the intro. out of the way, I'll address at least some of your questions and see what we can do.

HJT will not tell us if your OS is corrupt. HJT simply enumerates certain registry keys where Malware typically hides. So it gives us an "idea" of what's going on, infection wise.

I'll try to sum up here...the printer issue may or may not be related to malware. If I had to guess I would say no, but...

I'll help get your computer as clean as we can and then you can go from there with Dell.

I'm not seeing much in the way of infections but some things of note.

Are part of Morpheus. Do you still have it installed or use it? I would not recommend it if so.

Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur. Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of malware infestation. Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here : http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/

Was this set by you or some other program that you know of? This is a restriction. Leave it unchecked if it was set by you using a software like Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster or another similar protection software, or if these were set by your system administrator. Otherwise check/fix it with Highjackthis. I do wonder if it would affect a printer install though? May be something to look into.

First I ever heard of one...google is your friend.


Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now
    change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
  • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
  • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.



Please download ATF Cleaner here by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only.
It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and grays out the other(s).
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.


We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode Now

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.


Run AVG

  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button This must done before saving the report
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.

  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Now copy the report back to this topic.

Restart into normal mode and post the AVG Log and a new HJT Log. Also how are things now

Hi Dave!

Thanks for taking the time to look at my problem!

A couple of quick questions before we start.

1) The HiJack This logfile in my post is several weeks old- Would you like a recent one as I've made a few changes to my system since then.

2) I have Norton Go Back. Can I just use it to restore the system if anything goes wrong with our fixes or should I do any of the following:

I did Google WIBU key previous to your reply and as I understand it- it's a software protection application that is downloaded with some applications to prevent you from using their demos past the trial period. That way you just can't remove the demo application and it's components and then reinstall the demo indefinitely . . . . . . but I have to admit that I'm not really sure about anything I just said . . . . . . I was hoping that someone else might know for sure . . . . . . (Dell uninstalled it anyway).

(and I let them do it although they didn't seem to know what it was either- or what they were doing for that matter) (but it didn't seem to mess up anything else)

it also seems to be affiliated with the software PST (whatever that is).

"Was this set by you or some other program that you know of? This is a restriction. Leave it unchecked if it was set by you using a software like Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster or another similar protection software, or if these were set by your system administrator. Otherwise check/fix it with Highjackthis. I do wonder if it would affect a printer install though? May be something to look into."

-There is nothing in the registry that I or anybody else has set (since I bought the computer from Dell that is)! I do however have Spybot Search & Destroy, Norton Internet Security, Window's Defender, and I've added Protowall since the HJT logfile in my post! I also use Windoctor by Norton.

I do not know if any of these programs set "O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present" . . . .
If you think that it might have something to do with the printer problem then maybe I should check/fix it with Highjackthis as Dell has yet to find a fix for the printer. . . . . . And I have backups of my security programs so I can always reinstall those if they did set it.

I don't know if any of the following will help you find the problem(s):

1) Most of the problems I'm having are Windows application related. Internet Explorer won't open links after awhile, The Media Player won't always load (but shows up in task manager as running eventhough it's not accessible on the screen or toolbars- or viewable), Microsoft Word and Outlook Express sometimes load right up- sometimes not . . . . . . Everything is OK after a restart until things start acting buggy again. Sometimes 10 minutes later, sometimes several hours, sometimes not at all. I don't know.

2) ACDsee 5.0 won't load without giving me the prompt: System is busy- "Retry" or "Switch to" . . . . . (I'm not sure if that's the exact wording of not because this morning it works just fine even when multi-tasking ?!?!?!?!) And I've uninstalled and reinstalled ACDsee many times since the problems began to no avail . . . . . BUT: When this happens the process that seems to prevent ACDsee from loading properly is IDBSvr.exe (as viewed from the Task Manager). I should also mention that I've made no chages to ACDsee's preferences- it just started happening.

3) I can't play music and multi-task anymore without the song breaking up (although if I just play music it works fine). I used to be able to play music and do anything without this happening . . . . . .

4) I also get a lot of "Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger" errors. This has only happened since the problems began. It is not anything that I ever installed (or to my knowledge that Dell installed) I've read (googled) that Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger is really spyware called Acebot-

from a forum:

"No unless you yourself have installed Dr. Watson as the postmortem debugger. I read somewhere that this debugger is being used as a mask for some kind of stealth virus (AceBot trojan?) I hope I'm wrong."

but once again I am not sure.

5) All these problems began about the same time I started having trouble with my printer (which is most likely a software problem and not a hardware problem).

6) I should also mention that I've got 20GB's left on my C Drive so I don't believe that any of the above are physical memory problems . . . .

7) And according to "Check it Diagnostics" every test it runs comes up OK. It runs tests on:
System info, processor, memory, video, audio, modem, graphics, hard disk, removable disk, CD ROM, and shortcuts.

As previously stated, I don't know if any of the above info will help you or not!

I didn't see that, I usually check and ask for a fresh one first. Yes, definitely, every time you post a HJT please make sure it is fresh. In this case just run the tools I've advised and post a fresh log after that.

Basically back up files. The files on your D: drive should be safe with the fixes we do. That is just a "standard" warning I give most everyone that you should always have backups of your files. Programs can be re-installed, as long as you have disks.

Please do not use it while we do the fix. I can't stop you after that. Here is my take on P2P.

Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur. Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of malware infestation. For the rest of the questions, let's see how the fix proceeds and if things improve as we go. Question, how much memory does this PC have? And during normal operation how much free memory do you have? If you don't know how to check this then right click on the Taskbar and select Task Manager, Performance tab. Look at the total and available numbers under Physical Memory.

I'm Sorry, could you clarify "backup files" . . . . . Do I back up everything on C and D drives? Do I make a backup disk of C drive? Of D drive? -which I've never done but could probably figure out. I currently have over 5,000 songs on my C drive- should I move them to D drive or do I need to back them up by writing them to DVD? I understand that it is a standard warning, But I would be heart broken if I lost those files (5,000+ songs) because there is no way I could afford to replace them nowadays as I'm recently disabled and have no money for anything other than essentials . . . . .

I also have a few applications that came installed on the computer when I got it from Dell that don't have disks for. If something happened I would not be able to replace them. Would a backup disk take care of that? Would system restore?

I will not run Morpheus or anything else while we work on a fix. I will only do what you tell me once we begin!

I'm sorry to be a pain in the rear but I'm being really cautious because I have no money to replace anything should something happen. Since I became homebound I totally rely on my computer for contact with most of the outside world. I don't know what I would do without one . . . . . .

No, you don't need to backup the entire drive. When I say files I refer to things like Word Documents, Pictures, in your case SONGS.

It is up to you how to back them all up. That is a lot. Removing malware, or making any system changes always presents some kind of risk, I just like to limit that. In your case, what if your C: drive were to fail? You could replace your OS and most of your apps. probably but if you don't have a backup of those songs they're gone.
If there is room the quickest way to have a back up there is to use the D drive. Or you could put them on CD.

Chances are nothing will happen here. I've helped with probably a couple hundred people getting their computers clean and I have yet to lose one yet. But there is always a risk. Just something to think about.

The first step I gave you of running AVG and ATF cleaner is what I consider normal system maintenance. I run those tasks once a week regularly. If your system goes haywire after just running those tools then you really have something wrong.

The next tool I was thinking of running after this is an online Kaspersky scan, which is very thorough but makes no system changes, just reports what it finds for us to evaluate.

So why don't you go ahead and start with my first steps, and post the reports back to get started.

You're in good hands, I've done many of these. And your computer does not appear to be infected at this point, but I need to see more. What it does sound like is an OS corruption of some kind. But as I said as we go through this I'll have a better idea of what's going on.

Your system restore should be enabled, giving us something to go back to in case the worst does happen.

There is one entry:

This is a Control Panel restriction. Did you set this or one of your security apps set it such as Spybot?

Not really sure what the Spybot entries are in the PM you sent?

I didn't set anything like that that I am aware of. Of course there is the possibility that I set it unknowingly . . . . . :wacko: . . . . . . Is it something sinister?

Not really sure what the Spybot entries are in the PM you sent?


I just found out that the Spybot report is too big for a post. These are the results exactly as they appear at the top of the report:
