Hello! My brother's Dell laptop is incredibly slow, both in loading up programs, and in the initial start-up. System resources range between 40-20 %. I was hoping that someone could look through my Hijack This log to see if there was anything that needed to be fixed, or that I could get rid of.

First off, I've been through this process twice before, so I've got all the preparations ready. I've run McAfee, TrendMicro Housecall, ETrust AntiVirus, and Panda Active scan, and none of them found any viruses or trojans. Ad-Aware, Spybot, and CWShredder have been run and haven't found anything out of the ordinary. I've got McAfee Firewall, SpywareGuard, and SpywareBlaster all installed and running, so nothing harmful should be getting in. And I've got all maintainence taken care of: Defragmenter, ScanDisk, Disk Cleaner, and CCleaner have all been run, with no problems. All programs have been properly updated and installed.

Also, I'm not experiencing any browser hijacks or getting warning notices or anything. The machine is just painfully slow.

So, here's my log file:

Hello

I see very little indication of an infection but there is a hint of a severe infection without the usual file entries. I am going to have you complete the usual extensive fix to make sure if it is there, we get all that are hiding. I also see a large number of startup entries that will slow the computer down significantly when it is booting up. I know you have run most of the programs I am going to ask you to use, but to remove this infection they have to be run in the following order, step by step, exactly as posted.

First I need you to disable all protection except your AV and Firewall. Please disable SpywareGuard from starting and running as it will prevent the fix from working. Any other protection you have in place should also be disabled leaving AV and Firewall for protection.

To remove this infection you need to download several small free programs and follow the directions very carefully. During the fix you also can have no contact with the internet AND must also keep Internet Explorer and Outlook Express closed or the infection will be reinstalled.

I am first going to ask you to download the programs to clean with and then have you disconnect from the internet and use the programs to clean your computer.

Please copy and paste this entire set of instructions into Wordpad (Start>Programs>Accessories>Wordpad) so that you have them available when disconnected from the internet. You may also want to print them.

Step#1 - Show All Hidden Filesr

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
* Click OK.

Step#2 - CWShredder For use Later

1. Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder, from CWSInstall.exe

2. Check for Updates

Step#3 - Ad-Aware SE For use Later

3. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:

1. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder

2. Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.

3. REBOOT to finish the removal and clear memory.

3. Click 'fix checked

4. REBOOT

Step#9 - Cleanup

1.Make sure that all Internet Temp files are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK

2.Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder (do not delete the TEMP folder just the contents)

3. Empty your Recycle Bin

Step#10 - Clean Your Favourites Folder

This infection puts many undesirable links in your Favourites folder so you will want to clean that manually by checking all of your entries. (the added entries should be obvious)

**Reconnect to the Internet Now and Finish With an Online AV Scan and a HijackThis log**

Step#11 - Complete an Online AntiVirus Scan

Run an online antivirus scan at:

Trend Micro Online AV

Reboot

Step#12 - Scan With HijackThis

7. please SCAN again with HJT and

8. POST a new HJT log file and the About Buster log file here in this thread using 'Add Reply' for the next set of instructions.

Good Luck!
Hey dgos, thanks for the help.

I see very little indication of an infection but there is a hint of a severe infection without the usual file entries

Could this be a remnant of malware that was on here before? If I remember right, there was something called "WhenUSaveNow" that was causing problems. Once I disabled System Restore, McAfee Virus Scan was able to clean and delete it from the machine.

Anyway, I followed your instructions (to a point). I disabled all protection (except the firewall). Unhid all files. CWShredder found no problems. Ad-Aware found 2 cookies and deleted them.

Here is the About Buster Log:

I fixed the two items you chose in HJT. I cleaned up the temporary internet files and temp files.

And then the torture began: I had ALOT of problems running Trend. First, it took nearly two hours for the engine and files to download. Then, the thing froze before it even started scanning. I had to force quit and start over again. The second time, it got about 20,000 files in when it crashed again. This time, I was forced to hit the reset button. On reboot, after ScanDisk ran, the Trend Spyware checker came on: it did not show any problems. I tried running the scan twice more, and it kept freezing up.

So I got fed up and ran eTrust Antivirus instead. It found no problems. (Hope that's okay…)

Hi dmalt32,
I suspect the reason you had trouble with Trend Micro is that the infection deleted some system files. (this is one of the things this infection does). I don't see much in your log can you please tell me how the computer is behaving?

Step#1:

Now you need to see if you need to restore some deleted files:
  • Please check for the following files using the Windows Search Engine:
  • control.exe
  • rundll32.exe
  • wmplayer.exe
  • msconfig.exe
  • notepad.exe
  • shell.dll
  • SDHelper.dll

If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from
Merijn's Files and following the instructions at that site to have them where they belong for your OS.
  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • The other system file which is most frequently deleted is control.exe. Please check to make sure that you have this file and it is the correct size. If not Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to the information at this website. The control.exe is more often deleted in Win9x/ME.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
  • ** In cases where many system files are missing you have no alternative but to have them insert their Windows OS CD and run sfc /scannow from the Run box

Step#2:
  • Many entries are also added to the Favorites so please clean them removing any that appear to have been added by the infection

Step#3:

Run an online antivirus scan at:
Trend Micro Online AV
Reboot

If this doesn't work again please go to
Panda AV Online Scan and do an online AV scan. These online scanners have more up-to-date definitions than the others and in the case of Trend Micro have definitions specifically for this infection.

Step#4:

1. Scan again with HijackThis

2. POST your log file to see if there is anything left to fix
Hey again. All of those files you asked me to search for were present and working. The Hoster.zip thing wouldn't open. SDHelper.dll installed successfully. I've gone through the Favorites file and deleted just about everything.

Trend still refuses to load properly, so I did Panda Scan and it found the following:

Incident: Adware:Adware/Adsmart
Located: C:\WINDOWS\SYSMON.EXE
Status: Not disinfected

Panda won't disinfect unless you purchase the program (which I ain't doing). Is this a necessary file? Is it okay to just trash it, or do I need to boot to DOS to delete it?

And here is the latest HJT log:

This is likely to be a virus file but could also be a system file. To determine what it is please use Windows Explorer to navigate to it and then right-click and choose properties. In the properties of the file you should the Microsoft copyright or another recognizable and familiar copyright. It these are not there and the date of the file is within the time frame of the infection, then it must be deleted. Once you have determined that it is the virus file please:
  • Open HijackThis and click the fourth button from the top "Open the Miscellaneous Tools Section".
  • When the next page comes up you will see the third button is for "Delete a file on Reboot". Please click it
  • navigate to the C:\Windows\Sysmon.exe and "open" then when it asks you to reboot click "yes"
  • REBOOT

I see the presence of a McAfee AV on this computer, but it appears to be the online version not resident. Maybe I am missing the resident AV because I see the McAfee firewall. This is essential when you are using the internet. I suggest you download one of them, disable any McAfee online AV that is present and update the definitions for the new AV program and do a full scan and clean with it.

There are two very good free ones available with updates regularly for free as well:

    AVG Free AntiVirus

    Avast anti virus free
    Avast Free AntiVirus

Now to deal with you not being able to open the Hoster.zip.
  • Please Open HijackThis again and click the fourth button from the top "Open the Miscellaneous Tools Section".
  • Click the second button from the top on the next page Open Hosts File Manager
  • Select "Open In Notepad" and a notepad window will open with the contents
  • right-click > select all
  • Copy the contents of the notepad file
  • paste the contents into your next post here with your new HijackThis log that I will ask for:
1. Please Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

2. Put a check mark beside each of the following entries in the HJT window

O4 - Startup: POWERR~1.EXE

3. Click 'fix checked

4. REBOOT to finish removing the entries into SAFE MODE by tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up

5. In Safe Mode DELETE the following files and folders:

C:\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Startup\POWERR~1.EXE

6. REBOOT into normal mode

7. please SCAN again with HJT and

8. POST a new HJT log file and the contents of the notepad file from your Hosts file here in this thread using 'Add Reply' to see what is there and if it is clean.

**I will be asking you to change the contents of the hosts file if it contains remnants of the infection which is probable.**

Good Luck!

It's a system file. It's got the Microsoft Corp copyright on it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "resident". Does this mean installed via CD? I never bought the CD, I paid for and downloaded the program straight from the internet. I bought and installed the firewall via the CD.

I'll go do the Hoster thing now.
Here's the Hosts Notepad file: # Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost I'll do the new HJT scan next
I had HJT fix the POWERR file, but when I re-booted in safe mode, the file wasn't there. There is a backup in Hijack This\backups.

Here is the HJT log:

Hi dmalt32,
I have always associated the online McAfee with just running from their online website rather than being on the person's computer. Obviously in this case I am wrong because you say you have it on your PC. That is what I meant by resident. Have you updated the definitions and tried a full scan recently with it? It may be able to get rid of that virus you are found. I suggest you update and do a full system scan with McAfee and then:

There are other online antivirus which you can try to remove that infection. Panda used to remove after scanning, I guess they have changed their policies. I suggest you run at least one of them that fixes to remove the virus which is liable to be still there.

eTrust AV web scanner(Computer Associates)

Housecall Trend Micro AV Scan

Bitdefender AV scan

Your hosts file is clean and the HJT log looks clean, how is the computer behaving now?
Is it still very slow?

Some of the infections drop many 0 byte files into your C:\WIndows and C:\Windows\System\ directories and it might be wise to go through each folder to make sure there are no extra files that shouldn't be there. You can check them to find out if they are legitimate by checking the Properties of each.

There are a few things you should do now to make sure you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:
1. Right-click My Computer and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select Disable System Restore
4. Click OK twice
5. Restart your computer.

6. Right-click My Computer and again click Properties
7. On the Performance tab, click File System
8. Clear the check mark in Disable System Restore check box.
9. System Restore is now be active again.

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all Internet Temp files are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder
dgosling,

All of my McAfee definitions were up to date. I ran another scan and it didn't find anything. Same with eTrust. Housecall still doesn't work (which I don't really understand, since it worked before I initially posted this thread, but whatever…).

Bitdefender did find the Adware.BrilliView.A virus in the KaZaA file, so I deleted it. I ran the scan a second time to confirm that it was gone (and it was).

I checked the Windows and Windows\System files to see if there was anything out of the ordinary, and couldn't find anything. I re-enabled System Restore. I ran Disk Cleanup, and made sure the Internet Temp files were gone.

The computer seems to be running okay. If the host file and HJT log looks clean, maybe the only problem thats left is the slow Startup. Obviously, there are too many programs loading up, which makes startup slow, and eats up System Resources (they are currently running at 16%!). I don't know what half of the things listed in the MSCONFIG Startup folder do, and I'm afraid to disable something that might be vital for the computer to work. Any suggestions?

That Merijn's Files site had a program called Startuplist that was supposed to give details on everything the machine was using. Should I run that and post the log here, or will the HJT log be able to tell you what you need to know?

Here's the latest HJT log:

Hi dmalt32,

The log looks clean, congratulations! To answer your questions:

1) Housecall will not run - I suspect that your IE settings have been changed by the infection and this may be preventing Housecall from downloading the Active X it needs on your computer to be able to run. To reset your IE settings to default please open IE, go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs and click the button marked Reset Web Settings. The close IE and reopen it and try again with Housecall. That online AV has more of the definitions which apply to this infection that is why we recommend it at this time.

2)"I'm afraid to disable something that might be vital for the computer to work. Any suggestions?" Yes I will identify the programs that are major resource hogs and have you remove them with their own ability to disable or with HJT.

BUT the Startuplist that you found on Merijn's site will also help you here. If you download it you will be able to look up all of the files that appear in the O4's in the HJT log and decide for yourself what you need at startup and what you don't. The list of files in the O4's are the same as the ones you would see in MSCONFIG. Another way of disabling files that you don't need is to use at startup is Spybot SD's system startup . To do this:
  • Open Spybot SD and on the top menu choose Mode and set it to advanced
  • you will now notice 2 new drop down's on the left, Settings and Tools
  • choose Tools (make sure all icons on the right have a check mark beside them) then choose System Startup
  • using the Startuplist from Merijn's site, choose the ones to disable by unchecking them on the right. This is the equivalent of unchecking in MSCONFIG but doesn't cause your computer to load in Selective Startup mode.
  • REBOOT
3) Now I will have you remove the programs that are not needed when Windows starts. All can be started from the desktop after startup. When you use HijackThis below, you are removing the registry entries that cause each program to load at startup. If they were malware we would follow with deletion of the files but they are just regular programs that use a lot of resources when they start so all we remove is the Registry entry that causes them to start with Windows.

First I would like you to remove the first three programs from statrup with the instructions that follow each one. We will follow up with removing the startup entry in the Registry with HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MDM7] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Click to select the Disable script debugging check box, and then click OK.
5. Close Internet Explorer.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
Open RealPlayer and go to the Options. Disable the "load at windows startup" then use HJT below to remove the Registry entry that makes it load when Windows Starts. It can still be used manually.

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [SSDPSRV] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ssdpsrv.exe
To remove this program, open Add/Remove Programs, select either Communications (Me) and remove the checkmark next to Universal Plug and Play

Close ALL Windows except HijackThis:

Now, please scan again with HijackThis and put a check mark beside each entry below:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCHealth] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\Support\PCHSchd.exe -s

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WorksFUD] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\wkfud.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Portfolio] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WksSb.exe /AllUsers

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MotiveMonitor] C:\Program Files\Motive\motmon.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [SSDPSRV] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ssdpsrv.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [ATIPOLAB] ati2evxx.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MDM7] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE"

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

O4 - Startup: EPSON Background Monitor.lnk = C:\ESM2\Stms.exe

Click fix checked

REBOOT

Scan again with HijackThis and post a new log file to make sure that all is gone. If you are able to scan with Housecall, please indicate what it found and if it was able to clean any of it. Is it running faster on bootup?

Good Luck!
Definite improvement! Booted up much faster than before, and System resources are up from 15% to about 50%. I unistalled MusicMatch, Quicktime, the Epson printer and IOMEGA Zip drive programs too. So, things are looking good.

I tried Trend again. I get the same error message each time:

Trend did not update successfully. May result from busy server or bad network traffic. Error code 46: merging the incremental pattern was not successful

I click "yes" when it asks if I want to try again, and it takes twice as long to load the files. When it starts the scan, it scans for memory virus, then the registry, and then freezes on the system files scan. I left it alone for an hour to see if it would unfreeze, and it didn't work.

Here's the latest HJT log:

Does it matter that the last two 09 listings say "files missing"?
Hi dmalt32,
First to answer your question. Unlike all other lines in the HJT log, there is a bug in the O9's that indicates the files are missing when in most cases they aren't. We don't bother to check to see if they are there because most of the O9's are insignificant to the function of the computer. The only time we remove the line is if it is malware of some kind, otherwise we ignore them.

The log is CLEAN congratulations!

I suggest that you run Bitdefender again to make sure it is now clean. We usually run a program until it is clean, if we get a positive response from it.

Another thing that would be wise to do is make sure you have IE up-to-date even if you decide not to use it. IE is bound into the Windows system so tightly that it can be infected without using it through the exploits that are found regularly. Even though you are running Windows 98SE Microsoft has released a couple of critical updates which you should check for. Even though they do not support 98SE they still occassionally make them available and it is wise to check for them.

Your copy of Windows needs to be updated. Without the updates your computer will be defenseless against the infections that are everywhere on the internet. Critical updates for both Windows and Internet Explorer, are available at: Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

I think you may benefit from reading the article "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place" linked at the bottom of each of my posts, for information on how to secure your PC from spyware/adware/malware.There are several small free programs mentioned there that help with securing your PC against this type of problem. Considering you are using 98SE you should download every possible protection available (most are free) to keep yourself safe while on the internet.

Good Luck!
