I am working on another computer which is distinct to the one which I recently created a forum thread.

On this computer I run Norton 2007 with automatic updates, windows P with automatic updates, Zonealarm firewall together with a hardware firewall (Billion; incl NAT).

I just upgraded to Spybot 1.5, got the latest updates and it detected a trojan (which I have not yet allowed it to action). This is the first I had seen of this on this computer. I then upgraded adaware to adaware 2007, run update and then scanned and it did not detect it. I manually ran liveupdate in Norton 2007 and did a full scan and it did not detect it either.

Googling found the most references to 'hide_evr2'. I can see the registery entries re hide_evr2 as noted by Spybot. HJT does not seem to pick up hide_evr2 entries!?

This page, http://www.ca.com/us/blogs/posting.aspx?pid=93273 , seems relevant. However, I could not find the bend.exe nor the 9129837.exe on C:\ when including searching for hidden files. NEtiher could I find a service labelled '!!!'.

I'll include Spybot full log below (before fixing) followed by HJT log. What is the best way to fix this? Specifically in the instructions can you please identify what does and what does not need to run in safe mode:-

Hi -

Since you have done some research on hide_evr2.sys, you know that it is a nasty infection. It allows others to remotely access your computer. Some of your personal data on your computer may have been stolen.

Please follow these directions in the order stated.

• Uninstall the following programs:
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
- Select 100% Free Five Hundred Toolbar > Click Remove
- Select Dreamquest's 100% Free 500 Card Game" For Windows > Click Remove
- Exit.

• Reboot your computer.

• You will have to disable Spybot's TeaTimer because it will interfere with the fixes.
1. Open Spybot-S&D
2. Go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3. On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5. Restart your computer.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable TeaTimer again.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O2 - BHO: 100% Free Five Hundred Toolbar Helper - {6EA24EAD-2E33-43C3-B023-05FC1BA3C152} - C:\Program Files\100% Free Five Hundred Toolbar\v3.2.0.0\100%_Free_Five_Hundred_Toolbar.dll

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs leaving just HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Reboot your computer.

• Download and run Sophos Anti-Rootkit.
Follow the prompts. If there is an option to save a log, please do so and post it in your next reply.

• Download Superantispyware
  • Load Superantispyware and click the check for updates button.
  • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.
  • Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
  • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
  • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply.
• Post back with:
- the log from Sophos Anti-Rootkit
- the log from Superantispyware, and
- a new HijackThis log.
Thanks for your prompt reply. This is the second PC I've had to try to clean recently so I've read many threads lately. I'll add some observations/questions about other procedures/options. There was no mention of:- - the use of safe mode in your procedure. (I thus did not use it) - turning system restore off; often recommended as the blighters can hide there. (It was already off). - cleaning out all temporary files like with ATFClean. (I did, choosing 'All') - other threads say HJT must be installed within a folder o nthe desktop, not straight on the desktop. (I have it in a folder) - the SuperAntiSpyWare scan option are not the default ones, I applied the following scan preferences:- Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button. Click the Scanning Control tab. Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked): 1. Close browsers before scanning. 2. Scan for tracking cookies. 3. Terminate memory threats before quarantining. Should these have been included/recommend? I uninstalled the following programs: - 100% Free Five Hundred Toolbar > Click Remove - Note: I could not find 'Dreamquest's 100% Free 500 Card Game"' listed to uninstall - I also uninstalled all the following sus' shareware my wife had downloaded:- - 100% Free Five Hundred 7.02 - 101 Card & Board Games - 101 Puzzle & Logic Games - Boggle - Fun With Numbers & Puzzles (All via Add-Remove-Programs; names as per labeled there) • Rebooted the computer. • Disabled Spybot's TeaTimer as suggested • Rebooted the computer. • Started HijackThis, clicked System Scan Only and attempted to place a checkmark next to the following items: - The following item no longer existed to check: O2 - BHO: 100% Free Five Hundred Toolbar Helper - {6EA24EAD-2E33-43C3-B023-05FC1BA3C152} - C:\Program Files\100% Free Five Hundred Toolbar\v3.2.0.0\100%_Free_Five_Hundred_Toolbar.dll - The following item no longer existed to check: O3 - Toolbar: 100% Free Five Hundred Toolbar - {73FB038C-943C-47EC-A324-635635F796D2} - C:\Program Files\100% Free Five Hundred Toolbar\v3.2.0.0\100%_Free_Five_Hundred_Toolbar.dll - O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present - O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present I closed ALL browsers and open windows/programs leaving just HijackThis and clicked 'Fix Checked' (for the (only) two 06 entries as listed). • Rebooted my computer. • Downloaded and ran Sophos Anti-Rootkit v1.3.1. It found no items (thus no report attached). • Downloaded Superantispyware * I loaded it and got the updates and ran complete scan… The scan is still running as I write this. Once it is complete I will 1. Turn Tea Timer back on 2. post SuperAntiSpyWare log 3. Post new HJT log Note: As stated, Sophos Anti-Rootkit has no report to post as it found nothing.
SuperAntiSpyware found nothing.

I also tried AVG (formerly Ewido) latest version with web update; it found nothing.

I then reran spybot. It popped up a 'Warning'-titled window with the following text at the start of the scan:-
Spybot-S&D has detected a system service that has been identified as a threat:
Displayed name: !!!
Registry key: hide_evr2
It has been shut down. You can check its status on the System Services Control Panel

Spybot now shows that I not only still have

- PWS.Small.bs
- Win32.Small-2854

but also

- Nurech

I then ran HJT.

Logs follow.

• Please download ComboFix from one of the following links:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
- and save it to the Desktop.

1. Double-click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.

Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.

• Post back with the log from ComboFix (ComboFix.txt) and a new HijackThis log.
I haven't done the ComboFix yet as I thought I had better clarify something… When SpyBot identifies the malware I am *not* telling SpyBot to attempt to remove it (as I am not sure it is the best way to remove it). As documented SpyBot has been the only utility to identify these so far… SpyBot does mention as part of the description details for the selected scan item found that in each case safe mode should be used to get rid of it. Should I be attempting to remove it with SpyBot first or ComboFix? Should it being from safe mode?
I ran ComboFix in normal mode.

Hi -

• Run Spybot S&D and let it delete everything it recommends to delete including registry entries.

• Open Notepad and copy and paste the text inside the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\9129837.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\2.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\hide_evr2.sys

Driver::
2.tmp
hide_evr2.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt
[external image: Posted Image]
As in the above picture, drag CFScript.txt onto ComboFix.exe
This will cause ComboFix to produce another log
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

• Post back with the log from ComboFix and a new HijackThis log.
In normal mode I ran Spybot from an admin account. I had it fix all it found (same items as documented above). Spybot's description in the right hand pane suggested that Spybot needed to be run in safe mode to remove remaining components. I then ran Spybot from an admin account in safe mode. It found no more items.

I rebooted to normal mode.

I ran Spybot again to prove the !!! service wasn't detected after reboot into normal mode; nothing found (still).

I dropped the suggested file on ComboFix.exe and let it run.

The CombFix log:-

Good job!

Your log looks clean. You can delete the ComboFix.exe file; the C:\ComboFix folder; the C:\QooBox folder; the C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt and the C:\combofix.txt log that were created.

• It appears that you do have a software Firewall program present on your system. This will greatly help in preventing your system from being infected by malware. Please install a Firewall program because you really do need one.
Comodo is a good FREE software Firewall program.
See, Understanding and Using Firewalls

• If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

• Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

• Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

• To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

• Install IE-SPYAD puts over 20,000 sites in your restricted zone, so you will be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that are not actually innocent at all.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-virus and anti-spyware scanners scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.

• Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein).

Happy surfing again! :)
