 Hi. My computer is a mess. Known problem with SpySheriff and something else. Avast warning pops up every six minutes, 'round the clock while computer is on, warning of a virus and two malware apps. Here's the info Avast provides:

Win32:Trojano-3233 [Trj]-- filename http://85.255.115.18...ges/idemlog.exe

Win32:Adan-094 [Adw]-- filename http://85.255.115.18...ges/sphlp32.jpg

Win32:Adan-078 [Adw] -- filename http://85.255.115.18...ages/pppcgm.jpg

I have AdAware, Avast, Microsoft Antispyware Beta running right now. Have had Norton (hate it!) in the past; is now outdated and I'd love to know how to remove it. May have Spybot Search and Destroy on here somewhere -- have used this computer for several years.

I appreciate your help, Tom Coyote, and the fact that you fight against these resource-stealing programs.

Thanks,
Gingerhen

Step 1

Go to add remove programs and look for UnSpyPC and remove if present

Step 2
Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingc...showtutorial=61 ).

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner.
* Click on 'Complete System Scan' and the scan will begin.
* While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose 'Remove', then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.
Exit Ewido when it's done.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named 'Save report'.
* Click 'Save report'.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Step 3

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.gee.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items(if there):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0F01EF40-206A-B908-33E7-0EFEF28B73CD} - xxtoolbar.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: MissDNS logs DNS cache miss hits (Network Monitor) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\MissDNS.exe (file missing)

Step 4

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

sc stop "Network Monitor"
sc delete "Network Monitor"
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it.

Locate and delete the following:

C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\
C:\Program Files\UnSpyPC

Restart your computer to get back to Normal Mode. Post the Ewido,a new HijackThis log and the wareout log please.

Rebooted; turned off screensaver AGAIN (don't know how it got turned back on) and am about to reboot into Safe Mode and attempt to run Ewido again. In case the computer freezes/locks up this time, is there something I should or shouldn't do to help? This may be a moot point by the time I get back to this post, but just in case it fails a fifth time... Thanks

Thanks, Siggyx. Got through Ewido before reading your reply. Noted 14 objects on earlier scan; final scan that I could get report of showed only 2.

Fixed checked items in HiJackThis. Didn't see anything once I double-clicked on "delete.bat" file so I couldn't "locate and delete..."

Here are the logs. Please forgive my total and complete ignorance:

Please click Scan, and check the following items (if they appear):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0F01EF40-206A-B908-33E7-0EFEF28B73CD} - xxtoolbar.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmflu.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmflu.exe

If you see a new item that wasn't in your last log in the O4 section of HijackThis, five-letters long, starting with dm... for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dm***.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dm***.exe (the *** stand for random letters)
or starting with hg***.exe for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hg***.exe] C:\Windows\System32\hg***.exe
or starting with cs***.exe for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cscyd.exe] cscyd.exe
Check it as well. If you're not sure, leave it and only check the ones I asked you to check.

Then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.

Go to add/remove programs and look for NewDot.Net or New.Net and remove if present

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

This SpySheriff is some booger, isn't it?!? I really appreciate your help, Siggyx.

I didn't see NewDot.Net or New.Net in my add/remove programs. My programs display without extensions but I didn't see anything like New, NewDot, etc. in the alphabetical list. I also scrolled to the end & didn't see them there either.

You have a feww infections going on that was the main issue.

Go to add/remove programs and look for newdot.net or new.net and remove if present

Download smitRem.exe©noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
    [/b]:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

    Run Ewido:[list]
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Siggyx, You keep telling me to download and install Ewido. Am I not using it correctly? I've downloaded it twice now... Also (and I feel like an idiot), I right-clicked on the Panda scan icon, chose "Save to desktop" and clicked OK to save as active desktop item -- but I don't see any icon on my desktop or in my taskbar. Sigh. I appreciate all your help.

All right. I've tried three times to run RunThis.bat in Safe Mode. Each time the DOS window opens, asks if I want to continue, tells me to press any key. I do, and the screen freezes. I can't move the cursor, etc., and nothing happens until eventually I reboot.

SHould I go into Safe Mode and do the next steps, or something else?

Glad this isn't a problem with my health!
