Is it really download.trojan?

Thanks for your help. For months, NAV has been detecting the file "209724b2.exe" located in C:\DOCUME~1\whomever\LOCALS~1\Temp\ that is identified as download.trojan. NAV usually automatically deletes the file, but on occassion has been unable to do so; deleting registry keys listing 209724b2.exe seems to make occurences go away for a week or even two. I've never been able to find a likeness of this file on my drive to check the properties. Sometime in the past, one of the scanners picked up and deleted a Boackdoor.Nibu variant.

I have:
- followed the Symantec removal instructions which include running NAV in safe mode, but nothing is ever detected
- run Spybot S&D, left the tracking cookies alone, not much found
- run Ad-Aware SE, configured with options as instructed in the forum, found some SEARCHFAST registry keys it didn't like and quaranteened them.
- TrojanHunter (trial version) finds nothing, and TH Guard just sits quietly in the system tray

My thoughts:
- I doubt that I am getting repeatedly "re-infected" with the same virus/file. Other than NAV and TH, no other malware protection is running, but I don't seem to be getting hit with anything else.
- Could this be a NAV false alarm?
- A little knowledge is dangerous, so I'll shut up now. Here's a HJT log:

Hello neuro , welcome to the TC.

I suggest you do this:

Please disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck 'automaticly restore default without notifiction".

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pfg.dll

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
As requested (well almost):

Disabled SpySweeper
Also disabled TrojanHunter
Fixed registry with HJT except for the 016 entries that are part of an API I use regularly, from a "trusted" source - unless you know otherwise.
Went to Safe Mode
Searched but did not find pfg.dll
Deleted Prefetch files
Deleted all temp files for EVERY LISTED USER
Deleted Temp Internet Files (& offline content) and Reset Web Settings.
Logged on (still in Safe) for EVERY LISTED USER for this as well.
Emptied Recycle Bin (just for the primary user who deleted Temps & Prefetch)
Rebooted & new log posted below.

I really appreciate the "surgical" attention to fixing the problem, rather than requesting I run every malware removal utility out there. Any idea what pfg.dll is/was? I recall reading something about Prefetch when I was trying to fix this problem myself - do any of the utilities sweep/shred that area automatically?

Das machine is running well – a little faster without SpySweeper (trial was up in 2 days anyway) and a little longer to load apps without Prefetch.

Thanks

RegCleaner Download Now! (540KB) Jouni Vuoro Software

Description: RegCleaner is an easy to use program. With RegCleaner you can easily get rid of those old and obsolete registry entries created by software that you have destroyed ages ago. And by easily, I mean easily. You don´t have to be any expert to use this program.

Here's how it goes:
  • Download and install it.
  • Click on the RegCleanr.exe
  • Tools (at the top) > Registry Cleanup > Do Them All
  • Then 'Select' (at top left) > choose ALL
    'Remove Selected" (at bottom right)
  • A backup of all that was removed will be made, just choose 'Backups' (top right) to view them, you can delete them when you're confident they're no longer needed.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
HJT removed the specified key (which appears to be Sonic DVD's advertisement preference settings).

RegCleaner removed 92 'safe to delete' entries.

Computer is running fine, no NAV detections (yet?) but after my pedestrian efforts at removing the trojan in the past, the system would appear clean for up to a few weeks.

New log below.

If things look good to you at this point, I'm happy to wait a while to see if anything turns up. I would appreciate your recommendations on which software I should keep running in the interim:

NAV - 2004 currently, and will probably install 2005 (free w/ rebates)
SpySweeper - they use the enterprise version at my (very nailed down) corp; is it worth running (seems to slow performance, and generates eroneous "no connection to the internet available" messages frequently)?
Spybot, AdAware or TrojanHunter?

Thanks

Let's make sure none of the bad guys are hidding out in system restore area. They like to do that.

All of the Anti-Virus and spyware programs will tkae resources.

Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Great – your expertise is much appreciated. A few lingering questions: I keep creating restore points but have never used the restore feature. Any reason I should be hesitant to dump all of the prior points? How does malware "hiding" in the restore area become activated? I take it from your recommendations that the XP-SP2 firewall is not enough, and that a reasonable protection plan is to keep NAV active, use SpywareGuard (but no other auto-protectors) and run AdAware and SpyBot periodically. Correct?

The restore area keeps items that have been deleted. If you restore back to a point where you were infected, you'll be infected again

How does malware "hiding" in the restore area become activated? Same Answer as above.

As far as I know XP firewall only checks items coming in. If you have a bad guy that's calling home, it doesn't catch it.

Yes, I recommend those three programs and I use Grisoft AVG along with Sygate firewall myself.
