abbyy finereader 5.0 <— is an application you may have installed when you installed a printer/fax/scan hardware that has OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to allow you to scan documents and then edit them.
You may find the application in your C:\Program Files\(brandname of your printer/fax/scan)
You may find an uninstall feature amongst the folders nested with that printer/fax/scan software.

Regarding MS Updates:
Control Panel - Automatic Updates
(what selection do you have marked?)
Have you disabled any Services?
For instance,
Automatic Updates (service) needs to be Started and Automatic
Background Intelligent Transfer needs to be started and Automatic
Remote Procedure Call needs to be started and Automatic
hello again doug, all these problems ive got stem from running windows installer clean up tool. the abbyy fine reader is not in add/remove programs and in all program just shows up as a data box.. also some other dell program show the same.. i have all the installation disc from dell could these help. also no ms updates are disabled. when i manually start updates i am informed 'error' they cannot be installed. many thanks mark. windos 3.1 link has 3 option which is it. sorry being green again.
Hi Mark,
Do you have the installation CD for your Printer or Scanner that uses abbyy finereader OCR?
It very likely contains the version 5.0 application.
Reinstall it from the CD, allowing it to be installed into/over the top of, the previous installation.
At that point, it should again appear in Control Panel - Add/Remove, where you will then be able to Uninstall it if you wish.
Am I understanding what you are wanting to do here?
Best Regards
Note: The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility is an excellent tool provided by Microsoft (though unsupported).
Care is necessary in using the tool, since it removes the various Installation / Uninstall information and utilities for applications that use Windows Installer during installation.
When using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, the user should only select to cleanup the information/utility associated with an application that is giving problems and needs to be uninstalled. Allowing Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to take "all actions" can result in several applications being removed from the Control Panel - Add/Remove listing. Thus those several programs may not longer be accessible for uninstallation or modification and would necessarily have to be Re-installed prior to taking any such action to modify the application.
thanks again my 'luddite friend' no i do not wish to delete finereader it is just at the moment its a ghost 'there but not there' in add/remove. if i just re-install via disc will that be sufficient.
Probably.
Be sure to allow the installation Wizard to install into the same locations that the program was originally placed.
(you may be asked "(Program) is already installed at (location) do you want to continue with the installation?"
Answer yes, to get the installation Wizard to install fresh copies of the application files and fill in any that have gone missing.
Best Regards
sorted that part but as regards microsoft update problem. i get message 'some updates could not be installed' 'following update not installed' 'security update for microsoft.nt framework,version1.1 service pack1 (KB928366)' went to download windows installer 3.1 but do i need all 3 parts of download not sure, many thanks mark
Can't answer that question specifically or for certain, as I do not know your machine.
Some MS Updates are offered to the general windows operating community, whether or not one specific machine uses the update.
Since they provide a scan detection and recommendation of critical updates and patches for your machine, MS has at least identified that you "might' need the recommended downloads.
Do you need them all, right this very minutes? I don't know.
Might you need them for specific applications or for interacting with certain website content/functions….. Probably.
I tend to accept "all" MS critical updates and patches.
Exception: I'm still running IE 6.0 and avoiding IE 7.0 (user choice)
Even the "hardware updates" offered by MS "may' be essential.
I have noticed a few people running into difficulty when accepting the Hardware Updates.
But further analysis demonstrates that "so far" the hardware updates provided by MS are there for good reason.
Recommendation: Accept and install.
always glad for your advice as i am a mere novice, i wiil moniter this problem and post again if i encounter anymore. much obilged and again thanks mark.
