I have been directed to your site after days of searching for a remedy to my latest problem with Trojan issues.
I have loaded and run all your recommendations - one of the new ones being HyjackThis. I use the Kaperaky System and have been very pleased with it plus I always have had SpyBot and AdAware, XoftSpy, Windows Defender, and have just added Sunbelt, CounterSpy, Spyware Blaster and HyjackThis. The problem is with Trojan-Spy.html.Paylap.cb and it changes the end part to any of the following….fraud.gen, fraud.ln, bankfraud.gb.. .ri or .ra and on and on.

These seem to be related to emails that I used to receive and noted as "Spoof" things and were dumped into the Spam folder - never opened and read. Now my anti-virus program 'screams' and notifies me that it has blocked/deleted these. Nothing substantial ever turns up on my scans from all the other programs - and I'm happy about that! However, the Hyjackthis gave me this log files that I have no clue how to decipher. Could you please tell me if there is something there I should get rid of? I have copied the log below.
Thank you.

MaWilly,

Welcome to the forum, you have a few things we need to address. First I need to see an entire HJT log including the header. I can't even tell if your running the latest version or if its in its own folder, so do this.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use [external image: Posted Image] and not [external image: Posted Image]
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Thank you for your answer. Sorry about the omission… new results are below. This problem used to be an email.. ebay or paypal related and something to do with a Developers Conference. I never opened it and it just got dumped into the spam folder. Now it's being recognized by the virus program… both are Kapersky.

Thank you for your answer. Sorry about the omission… new results are below. This problem used to be an email.. ebay or paypal related and something to do with a Developers Conference. I never opened it and it just got dumped into the spam folder. Now it's being recognized by the virus program… both are Kapersky.

MaWilly,

I will be done for the night in an hour so when you post back I will look at it in the am.

C:\Program Files\ePad995 <– What can you tell me about this program??

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

You need to stop these programs from starting when windows starts as they may interfere with the fix
C:\Program Files\a-squared Anti-Malware
C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy

You have AVG Anti Spyware, run it this way and its important that I see the log.

When you open AVG , deactivate the Resident Shield by clicking on it and changing it to disabled.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <–Don't forget this
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important, I need to see that log.
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Still in Safemode, delete this file, it may not delete, let me know if it won't and we will have to run a special program to remove it.
C:\windows\system32\windii32.dll

Reboot and run this system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

I need to see the AVG Log and a New HJT log.
Good Evening.. I'm sorry it took so long to reply but I had foot surgery today and this is the first I've been able to get to the computer!!

The EPad999 is a little program that puts a sticky note on my screen so I don't forget things.

Here are the results you wanted after I followed all your instructions.

Hope your surgery went well, :D I manage computers in a large Orthopedic and Neurosurgeons office.

That 020 entry we removed was a virus and its gone. I am not sure but I believe those entries from AVG had to do with a bad update. Open up AVG and go into Reports and if you saved it , it will be in there, Copy and paste it into this thread.

If you have no report, try updating the program again and run the scan in Safemode and post the report.

You can remove these with HJT.
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe

There are issues with this program so I suggest removing it also

If no luck with AVG, run the free online virus scanner from Panda and be sure to post the report for me to see.

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
  • A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
  • If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
  • Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
  • Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
  • Save the log someplace you can find
  • Reboot
  • Post the Panda scan results in your next reply
That's quite a coincidence about your job! Now's not the time to tell you if it turned out OK! It hurts like H…L and is swollen, discolored and downright ugly! All I can say is this is the 3rd one on that foot and I totally trust my doctor. He's terrific and ultra conservative. Where are you located? Now Albany, NY, right? Here's the report… looks like you're a genius also! ——————————————————— AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report ——————————————————— + Created at: 12:07:19 AM 6/1/2007 + Scan result: Nothing found. ::Report end How did you know that was a virus? Thanks. MaWilly
Good Morning, Been at this for awhile so I can pick viruses out of your log pretty quick. I am south of you in Darien, CT. I have relatives in Colonie outside of Albany. AVG found nothing  How is your system running now??
I haven't had any incidences since you had me delete that first file from HJT! I still have no idea how it turned from a spam/spoof to a virus! None of the anti-virus programs had a way to get rid of it… just block it… I thank you so much… This will be my first stop in the future to save myself a great deal of aggrivation! MaWilly
MaWilly,

This is what you had. %SYSTEM%\ windii32.dll

Glad things are better

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
