I am (was) having a very similar problem as this recent topic,
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Being_Directed…gle_t79694.html

Everything Google related was just messed up, couldn't log into Google Talk or Google Mail. Every time I did a search on Google, even as simple as a search for "MSN", the results were completely bizarre. It would bring up stuff about Credit cards and Viagra. And when I clicked the main link, that would say something like "Save on your credit cards" or something, it would go to some webpage about credit cards, but if I clicked the "Cached" button, it would go to what I actually searched for, www.msn.com. And I've also been getting pop-ups every 5 minutes or so

( A error just popped up just this second
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience
| Send Error Report | | Don't Send | )

..continuing…Pop-ups every 5-10 minutes no matter what site I'm on, I NEVER used to get pop-ups.

Since this sounded similar as Toorak's problem, I started following Noviciate's very detailed instructions. Installed everything he said, disabled internet connection, un-plugged cable cord….Then I got to this step.

Click on 'Do a system scan only' and place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

And I noticed none of those he said too put a checkmark next too were listed in mine…( I figured, different log, different list ). I dunno, I'm a newbie at this troubleshooting stuff.

So I plugged my cord back in and connected to internet….and my google was back to normal, and it let me log into Google Talk. I guess "Fixwareout" took care of that. But I'm still getting the pop-ups, and I just don't feel safe.

So here's my HJT log.

The pop-ups and

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

appears to be happening more frequently.
Download Avenger by Swandog, and unzip it to your desktop or somewhere you can find it. (Do not run it yet).
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger.zip

Note: The Avenger must be run from a user account with administrator privileges,

and ONLY works on Windows 2000 and XP, and only on 32-bit versions!
If yours is a 64 bit version, do not use it, let me know.

Open a Notepad file by clicking Start > Run and typing Notepad.exe in the box, click OK.

Click Format, and ensure Word Wrap is unchecked.

Copy and Paste all the text inside the box below into Notepad.

Now save the file as RemoveFiles.txt in a location where you can find it.

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sfsync02.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ljgddc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\qopqpq.dll
C:\dnsbak.reg
C:\WINDOWS\vtrstr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\awutrr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\5x.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DGN11n.dll

Start Avenger by double clicking on Avenger.exe.

Check Load script from file:

Click on the folder symbol below and to the right, and browse to RemoveFiles.txt.

Double click it to enter it into Avenger.

Click the green traffic light symbol.

You will be asked if you want to execute the script, answer Yes.

At this point you may get prompts from your protection systems, allow them please.

Avenger will set itself up to run the next time you re-boot, and will prompt you to re-start immediately.

Answer Yes, and allow your computer to re-boot.

Upon re-boot a command window will briefly appear on screen (this is normal).

A Notepad text file will be created C:\avenger.txt.

Copy and Paste it into your next post please, along with a new HJT log.

Also, I was unable to delete…

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Thanks a lot! For Spyware I have AVG-AS, for Antivirus I have AVG. And for firewall I have the windows firewall. Is this adequate? Also, you said Adaware & Spybot were both available below, where were you referring to?
