For a few weeks, every time I do a search in Google or Yahoo, when I click on a search result, I am redirected to another page that looks like an advertiser search page, such as "monster search", or "lycos search" with commercial websites on the topic of my search. When I go back to the google search results and click again 2 more tries, I get redirected to more commercial search sites. Usually on about the 3rd try, I actually get to the site I was trying to reach.
For the last couple of days, Explorer will suddenly quit and I'll get the "error" popup asking if I want to send an error report to microsoft. Also, I have been trying to use windows media player to view a video from my camera, and every time I open the site, the computer restarts. I do know another user of my computer has downloaded some videos from who knows where, and this could be a source of problems.
I have updated and run Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, and McAfee Virus scan. Here is the Hijack This log from my account on the computer. Thank you for your help. Please advise!!!

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay in responding but we get a little overwhelmed with logs most of the time. Your Operating System is out of date and letting this stuff in, we will address that after we get you clean.

It looks like your infected with Wareout and are being redirected here

Inhoster hosting company

Lets do this. You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.
  • Open HJT > Misc Tools > Process Manager.
  • Click once on C:\windows\system32\winhfa32.dll
  • Click on Kill Process.
  • Close HJT
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
FixWareout Subratam
FixWareout Lonny
  • Save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Click Next, then Install,
  • Then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.
Save the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt and post it into your next reply.

Now lets check some settings on your system. For (2000/XP) Only)
  • Go to Start > control panel.
  • If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections.
  • Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl.
  • Left click on properties.
  • Click the Networking tab.
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems
  • Next Go start> Run type cmd and hit OK
  • Type in ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)
  • Type exit hit enter
Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

If you know what this one is you can leave it

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Boot up normally , post the log from Fixwarout and a new HJT log.
Ken,
Thanks for the quick response!
I followed your instructions. I couldnot find the

I also have discovered another problem. I was trying to download some software and unzip the program for a toy, and I got a message about 16bit something. Then it asked me did I want to change to try to download it from an older operating system, and I checked NT because I saw something in the file that said NT, but that didn't work. I'm not sure if I have changed some setting on installing programs to NT from XP ( I have XP)
Anyway…this may not make sense–but I may have changed some setting. ;)
You can disregard that last problem I mentioned. I found out what I did. I rightclicked on the file I was trying to install, and changed the operating system back to XP. Now it works. Please check my hijack file in that previous reply. Thanks!
speedmom :D

You did very well  A few things to fix.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

C:\windows\system32\csjjz.exe
C:\windows\system32\winhfa32.dll

Highlight all the files with the complete path inside the quote and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.
  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure ALL Files is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you do an Online installation, it will install automatically.
  • If you do an Offline installation, you will have to save the setup file to your hard disk and run it. Your call.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to do an Offline Installation and save the setup file in case I need it in the future

NOW, –> you need to open IE and go to Tools> Windows Updates and download every critical update thats available. Do not download and install any driver files You want to get your system up to Service Pack 2 and beyond. These will help stop a lot of this garbage from installing. This will take you an hour or more but they are very needed to keep you secure. You can download Service Pack 2 from Here or order the free CD from Microsoft if you are on a dial up connection which could take hours.

I will keep this thread open for you for awhile , please post back and let me see what you accomplished. Are you still being redirected?? Post a new HJT log when done and lets make sure nothing has come back.
Quick question before I begin. The last time I tried to install Service Pack 2, my mouse was totally disabled and I had to negotiate through the whole computer using the tab key to finally uninstall it. Do you know why? I have an HP pavillion computer. Somewhere, I think I heard that HP's need something extra when putting in service pack 2. Have you heard anything about that? Thanks!
speedmom,

I was not aware of the problem with HP, there very well might be. Here is a site with some information. You have to understand that you have absolutely no service packs or any kind of critical updates installed, I can't stress enough how important it is for the security of your system. You need to call HP and give them your model and serial number and have them run you through it. They may be able to supply you with a disk with the drivers you need.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/generic…&lc=en#N296

To install SP2 , you need to get your ducks in a row.

1. Your system should be malware and virus free <– you are
2. Defragment your system to make it nice and tidy to accept the update <– Instructions below
3. Turn off your Anti Virus program <– You can right click on it in the system tray and disable it
4. Turn off any Pop Blockers or any spyware programs.
5. Turn off your screensaver.

Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter. This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile. Make sure you select your C:\ Drive

But like I said, you need to contact HP and make sure there are no HP system updates you need before you begin.

Good Luck :D

Thank you for responding
My computer starts and goes to the login screen, then after login, there is only the background of the desktop on the screen. No icons, no start button, no task bar, etc.

I was delaying installing sp2 (as suggested in the last response from your forum) because I am trying to delete enough files to defragment first. (the files are deleting, but it is stays at only 12% free and it says I need 15%). I did install available Windows updates.

In the meantime, my computer has been going nuts.
Someone in my household must have downloaded a bad trojan/hijacker/something.
First, I was getting messages from my firewall that 5 e-mails every few seconds were trying to go out. I kept trying to tell the firewall to stop them, finally I disconnected from the internet.
Then I did Adaware and spybot. Certain programs were identified, and most were deleted, except something called smitfraud. Then when I tried to restart, a popup told me I was going to lose some windows files unless I inserted my XP disc. I didn't have it at the moment, (I will by tomorrow. My daughter forgot to bring it home with the computer when we moved it back. Then my computer shut itself down and restarted on its own. Now, my desktop is blank. The icons, task bars, etc. have all disappeared. Only the background is visible. To open anything, I have to bring up Task Manager, and browse to open something. I can't seem to find the control panel file at all.
Help!!!!!!! Thank you so much for any advice/help you can give me….

Could not find any of the 4 items listed in HJT process mgr.

Tried deleting this item on the HJT scan:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: rpcc - C:\WINDOWS\System32\rpcc.dll, but it always reappears if I scan again.
The other items did delete
Could not delete thefile Windows\system32\prcc.dll.
When I tried to delete, I always got the message the "cannot delete…being used by another person or program….close any program that might be using this and try again."

I did run disk cleanup.
The desktop is still blank, except for the background. I don't see any change in the computer yet.

Here's my latest HJT log
