Recently, within the last week, I have had some disturbing developments on my computer. All symptoms are for IE and Mozilla-Firefox

The main symptoms are:
(1) Popups for "hornymatches.com", "publishers.clickbooth.com", "goldencasino.com", or a "earn college degree online website" which occur at mozilla and IE startup. These popups continue to be generated throughout the internet experience.

(2) Inability to search on Yahoo or Google. When entered into the search field, the query stalls, and will not proceed. Ask.com works, but Google and Yahoo will not return any searches.

(3) I cannot log into my gmail account. Gmail's home page loads (as does Yahoo's and Google's for problem 2)

(4) Loading content (i.e. video from youtube, songs from yahoo music) sometimes are incomplete, while streaming content (Justin.TV or fmenergy927.com) get jittery,

(5) I have run Microsoft's malware, spybot search and destroy, and mcafee antivirus. Microsoft was the last to run and found nothing. Spybot finds and deletes the same entry every time. Mcafee found some infected files, but now encounters none, despite persistent symptoms. I ran these in safe mode as well. These were complete scans (taking about 3 hrs each)

(6) I can access webpages fine, so long as I type the address in. Again, no searching. I found this website on another computer and entered the address to get the hijackthis install. All failures are for mozilla/firefox 2.0.0.9 and IE version 7.

(7)I have not been able to search my processes since the searchs either dont return (google and yahoo) or are awful (via ask).

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
alright Ill get started on it now. I just wanted a quick update. While waiting for this to be replied to, I ran McAfee again which found about 75 trojans, all of which have been cleaned. I will run your suggestions and repost.
Included in this post are a number of topics
(1) More details on computer performance
(2) Computer specs
(3) Malware's Report Before Reboot
(4) Malware's Report After Reboot
(5) Hijackthis Report After Reboot

(1) MOre details on computer performance:

Other than the 7 listed symptoms specific to internet/browsers, I havent noticed any problems with other programs. Video games (Warcraft III) run without a problem, though encounters latency that wasnt present, when playing online. Other standard programs (word, excel, other office products) run without error.

When opening Adobe Pro, an error window sometimes pops up, giving a conflict of memory space error, with the prompt to close the program (the program does not close). System Boot and startup after password entry are not sluggish. I disabled all the startups with msconfig, and startup is almost instananeous. I did notice, however, that a few times on start up (certainly not every time) the cmd prompt window opens, does something I can't read, and dissapears. Sometimes there have been 2 or 3 cmd prompt windows that open and then close almost instantaneously.

USB devices (ipods, external hard drives, flash drives, etc.) function properly. I worry about passing along the infection, so have ceased using them (though i did back up important files).

DVD-ROM drive reads movies, though movies are choppy (a problem I had before the virus incident)

Data transfer via FTP protocols (using Wise-FTP) functions fine. Again, to contain virus, I have ceased transfer of files.

(2) Running:
Microsoft XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 2
Dell Precision M65 INtel Core 2CPU T7200 @ 2gHz
2.0 GB RAM
90GB harddrive

I ran combofix and the log is below. When I tried to restart, I could not log in to windows "DVRT4…. not available." I restarted to last known good setting with a reboot. I tried restarting normally twice (once by combofix, once by myself, then the third time used the restore feature). restoring allowed me to log in but im not sure what it did to the combofix actions.

When windows did finally open, combofix completed and made this log

Combofix log (after running combofix, then rebooting to last known good configuration)

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I have not noticed anything unusual with computer performance. I still have all the startup options on msconfig turned off, so things like INtel Proset Wireless dont automatically start, and the "start" button isnt pretty, but I want to fix the attack, then work on the aethetics.

There are no popups for mozilla or ie

Google and Yahoo both search on Mozilla and IE

All the complaints I had (or at least noticed) seem to be gone.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
I have to admit, this was pretty awesome. I spent literally a week trying all the usual stuff, and nothing was working. In one day, and what was actually like 3 man-hours (opposed to waiting for reply posts) in one day you fixed my entire system. To think that all that hassle was so easy to fix. Thanks alot. I mean, alot. I was at the point where I was just going to reforrmat the harddrive and start over. I know you must hear this alot, but you saved me so much time, agony, my computer. Thanks so much D
