My computer is running extremely slow, it takes a long time to open a file and the internet is even slower sometimes it can take up to 5 minutes to open a web page, i also keep getting a message everytime i open a new web page sometimes the page won't open the message is: Several Java Virtual Machines running in the same process caused an error. My children use the internet to chat on MSN, play games could this have anything to do with it? How can i make the comptuer run more efficently? my broadband connection is 1.1mbps. Any help greatly appreciated
You may have a variety of JAVA applets running when logged onto the Internet relative to the various games that have been played.

Is this the same machine that you posted here:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Computer_says_…mp;#entry308488

If so, it appears that you may not have Sun JAVA Runtime Environment installed.
If you do not, or have not recently updated to JRE 1.0.6u1, then do so.

Use Control Panel - Add/Remove to Uninstall "all" existing older versions of JRE/JAVA.
Next
Go Here to download the "offline" JRE installation file:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down about to the middle of the page. You want Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1
Click - Download - Accept the License Agreement
Select - Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe 13.16 MB
Download and Save to a location you'll easily remember
Close all Windows and Browsers
Using My Computer, navigate to the jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe you just saved
Double-click to initiate the installation If you are alerted by your firewall that JAVA is attempting to access the Internet, go ahead and allow access to internet.

Reboot when installation is complete.

Try your Internet connection now.
Let us know how the machine is functioning.
More steps "may" be necessary.

Are you using the new Internet Explorer version 7.0?
This is not necessarily an advantage and you "may" benefit from rolling back to IE 6.0 – but not yet.
Right now we just need to know what version you are presently running.

Next:
Please go to http://www.pcpitstop.com
Run the Full Tests - requires that you register and accept an ActiveX. It's safe to do so.
when you get your results, please post the TechExpress Link, so we can analyze how your machine is running at this time.

Best Regards

Hi I have done everything you asked me to do, and also what was recommended by pcpitstop, the pc seems to be running a bit faster and so does the internet, though i still get the error message about Java.
The message "computer says no" was my original post, i haven't carried out your recommendations to fix the computer as i was worried that we would lose our data.
Any other help would be greatly appreciated
Regards
If you are still concerned about losing valuable data, the best practice is to backup your important information to a "separate" location, for instance: an External Hard Drive or CD/DVD
Please complete a backup of all information you are concerned about now, before proceeding.
Note: nothing in the instructions below will put your data at undue risk, but it is simply "best practice" to make backups and keep backups current. :)

Download Everest 2.20 (free) here.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

In Everest - Navigate to Motherboard - Memory

Download ATF-Cleaner, here:
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/

Double-Click to Open/Run ATF-Cleaner
in the list of "Files to Delete" - Select - the last item (Select All)
Press - Empty Selected
When ATF-Cleaner announces that it has completed, - Press Exit

Note: It is "common" for the machine to load and run somewhat slower for a brief period of time after running AFT-Cleaner.
This is because ATF-Cleaner clears the PreFetch cache. As applications are opened and loaded, their entry will be replaced into PreFetch and the application will run the way you previously expected on the next time you open/load the application.
