Hello I have been so frustrated with Windows M. Player not working I just
about have had it.
I have now reverted by to WMP 9 and still can not get any sound.
I am get a new error message now that states "You've encountered error
message 8007007E while using Windows Media Player. Additional information is
not currently available for this error." and also error message 80040154. What is this and what must I do to
get the thing to play

Check the following:
DirectX
third party codec's
sound card drivers
video card drivers
It probably is not a MS Media Player problem, but is more likely a codec, driver or hardware probem

What Operating System and service pack? Have you updated recently?
OEM, preloaded, Upgrade version, format and clean install?
Do you use bit-torrent and/or peer-to-peer download software?
Do you have any Sony hardware components or software components?
Are you attempting to play Sony copywrited media?
What file format(s) have you tried to play, that have failed?
What file format(s) have you tried to play that have succeeded?
Did WMP ever work correctly on this machine? When? What has changed since that time?
What hardware changes have you made within 30 days of the onset of the WMP problem?
What software changes have you made within 30 days of the onset of the WMP problem?
What version of DirectX do you have installed?
Any errors being reported in DirectX.log
Have you run dxdiag.exe? What results
What third-party codecs have you downloaded? When?
Any errors or warnings showning Device Manager?
Have you updated your multi-media display gameport drivers?
Have you updated your sound card driver? What kind? When? Which?
Have you updated your video card driver? What kind? When? Which?
Have you updated your Chipset Drivers?
How much RAM do you have? Any recent RAM changes?
Are you overclocking? By what standards?
Run MemTest86 recently? what result?
Have you dumped temp and temporary internet files recently/often?
Have you defragged your HD recently often?
What HD setup are you using? One, two, more? ATA or SATA, RAID configuration?
How much free space do you have on C:\
Have you run CHECKDISK or Drive Fitness tests recently? Any bad-clusters identified or files moved?
Have you run System File Checker recently? any system files found missing or corrupt?
How many background programs are you running typically?
What applications/processes are in your startup?
Any disabled devices presently installed?
When's the last time you used compressed air to blow out the dust bunnies?
What are your voltages on 12v 5v 3.3v 1.5v?
How old is your PSU?
What is the total wattage capacity of your PSU?
How many PCI devices and peripherals have you installed since the machine was new?
If you have been installing PCIs and peripherals, is your machine an HP or Compaq?
What anti-malware do you have installed?
How often do you run them?
Have you run any online scans?
How many user accounts on the machine?
Do you have exclusive access to your machine?
Are your speakers plugged in correctly?
Powered up correctly?
Turned on?
Does WMP load and track the tune/video with the progress bar moving?
Do you have DVD?
What third party DVD software have you loaded? PowerDVD? Intervideo? etc?
Have you checked seating of your video Card?
Have you checked seating of your Audio Card?
Aux. power connectors?
Checked the IDE cable/ribbon to your CD/DVD units?
Are your CD/DVD units being recognized in BIOS?
That will get us started.

If you have any other media playing utilities, like Winamp or RealMedia
Be sure that the file format associations are not set as default to that other utility instead of to WMP.

You will definitely benefit from following the Recommendations included in your Pit Test Results.
CPU load 46% yikes!!! <— Disabling various of those "Purple" applications in StartUp will relieve that load.

as to Media Player –
Since you have RealPlayer installed and running active from StartUp, it is a high-likely guess that RealPlayer asked you to accept it as "default utility" for the full range of Media File Formats. Thus is you try to open a media file in WMP, it will fail because the File Format is not "associated" with WMP. <— that could be the cause of your problem without looking any further.
Additionally, it doesn't look like you've installed any Codecs.

Looks like you have a bunch of stuff that came with the original machine installation in 2001.
You may not be using much of that older stuff and could benefit from some housecleaning.
