Hi,
Is your friend's copy of Windows XP a genuine one where it was acquired legitimately with all fees paid and a Certificate of Authenticity displayed on the computer housing?

to be honest with you i really do not know. he gave it to me and told me to see what i can do with it. he told me he has had it for like two years but he got that pop up lately and now the computer will not even log on. it there any way that someone can help me just to log into the computer?
Hi,
If the computer has a genuine XP operating system installed and licenced, with the correct fees paid and the Certificate of Authenticity displayed then I will be happy to give you whatever help I can. If the Windows operating system has not been acquired legitimately then I suggest that your friend contacts Microsoft, explains the situation to them, pays the fees and legitimises the installation.
It might be sensible then to reinstall the operating system and using the supplied product key Activate Windows afresh.
If your friend has the original Windows XP installation disc handy and the original product licence key (25 digit alpha-numeric code) then inserting the disc and trying a repair from the Recovery Console might help.

hi,
when i got the computer, inside the dvd rom was a cd with a microsoft windows sp2 update in it. if i call him and ask him for his key, would i be able to use one of my recovery disc to fix his computer or would i need his specific cd? and also i would have to boot from the cd rom correct?
Hi,
Yes you would need to boot from the CD Rom drive unless you have downloaded a set of the 6 Microsoft Boot Floppy discs that can help get you started but you will still need the Microsoft XP installation disc (cd) to do a repair.
If he has a Recovery Disc (CD) specific to that particular machine and a valid Product Key then it could be used to format the hard drive (beware this wipes totally anything, repeat yes anything, on the drive)
Using a recovery disc from another source is fraught with difficulty and rarely meets with success.
The Windows XP service Pack 2, update disc, is not going to help you boot up correctly
